  1. All- Thanks for the many great responses. Now it's not that I'm some kind of high roller... 'cause I'm definetly not... but I'm not too worried about dropping $400 on a Mallory. I'm ready to commit to the Rebello 2.7L and the triples which I know won't be cheap. I won't be using a Pertronix in my stock dizzy... because it's 40 years old and has nearly 300,000 miles on it. My initial idea was the 280ZX electronic dizzy with a MSD box... but that would be a 30+ year old part that probably needs a rebuild and a rebuilt one is ~$150 plus an ignition module for another ~$150 and then I still need the mount. That's already $300+ and the Mallory can be had for $342 on Amazon of all places. http://www.amazon.com/Mallory-4563901-Breakerless-Electronic-Distributor/dp/B000FVU7IE/ref=au_pf_pfg_s?ie=UTF8&Model=240Z%7C2284&n=15684181&s=automotive&Make=Nissan%7C67&Year=1972%7C1972&vehicleType=automotive&newCar=1&carId=001 So after the positive responses here I would say that the Mallory is a go and I'll give it a shot with a Promaster? coil... but I'm not quite sure which one is right... maybe this one... good for 6500rpm on it's own and 8000rpm with the box to get all the potential from the Rebello powerplant. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MAA-29440/
  2. Man... It's been awhile since I've been around here! Well, I'm finally ready to start dropping some money into the Z to get ready for the restomod/refresh that I plan to start next year. The final plans call for a Rebello 2.7L with triple Webers, but what I'm wanting to do in the next couple of weeks is upgrade to electronic ignition. As of right now my plan is to grab a Mallory Unilite 4563901, this can be had for around the $400 and would be new. I was considering the 280ZX dizzy, but they will most likely need a rebuild anyway so I figure I'll just go with the Mallory. My Q's... 1- Is the Mallory a drop in on the L24 or will I need the dizzy mount like the 280ZX has? 2- What, if any, advantage will an ignition box add to this set up? 3- Should I go with the matching Mallory coil, or is something known to work better? 4- Any issues getting factory tach to work with any of this? 5- Other suggestions are always welcome. Some of these answers I've found, the problem is that some answers are preference and others contradict each other. Thanks for any input...
  3. Hey Grant- I'm in Noblesville (Northeast suburb of Indy) about an hour and a half from Ft Wayne... I-69 Exit 10. Shoot me a PM if you're going to be down this way. The Indy Z Car Club meets the second Thursday of each month at 7pm at Hubler Nissan in Greenwood (south side of Indy). Next meeting is June 14th. http://www.indyzcarclub.org/site/
  4. Thread Revival! I'm big fan of clay bars. About 5 years ago I bought the Meguiars kit that comes with the two individually wrapped small bars. I never looked at these as a use once and discard item... in fact I clayed my Z twice, my '07 Frontier once and my wife's '05 Sentra once before I tossed the first bar and moved onto the second. I have always used the Meguiars exterior detailer spray which I keep on hand because with a black truck I find it useful to go over after drying to get off little water spots. Worth noting... I bought the clay because after washing and waxing the Z it always felt rough and dirty. The first time I clayed her it took forever and the clay did pick up quite a bit of orange color along with with the contaminents. Even when I used the Meguiars cleaner wax afterwards I picked up even more "dead paint", but since then I have never noticed any color on the wax applicator, buffing cloth or clay bar. I've turned a bunch of friends into clay lovers too. Heck, I've got a buddy that apparently drove through some wet cement with his 350Z and the clay got it off without damaging the paint... that took a lot of work, but it did the trick.
  5. I also like the subtle flares. Larry- the work on that 260 is outstanding. I hope to see that one around some of the events/shows this year. I will be in need of a paint and body guy probably mid next year... and Chicago is just up the road from Indy. You just made the short list

  7. Gary, well put. The Car Show has potential but has a LONG way to go to meet it. Not really sure what John Salley brings to the table, but Dan Neil is a dousche that they need to ditch quickly. Even the logo doesn't work... what the heck car is that supposed to be? I do like the fact that Adam is a Nissan/Datsun guy and has brought some of that to the show. While everyone will continue to say that Top Gear UK is better than Top Gear USA (which in most cases I agree) the fact of the matter is that while it's a great automotive show... it just doesn't apply that much to the US. TGUSA has been great so far about bringing the truck element to the show. This would be completely out of place on the UK show where my Frontier with 2" of lift is considered a big vehicle. I'm excited about the HD truck test on the next episode. Truly American. My .02 cents.
  8. Yeah man I saw them too! My wife thought I was going nuts because I pointed out every one I saw... pretty sure there were 5 seperate ones. I assumed they were Fairlady Z's as well
  9. ! I remember when I went to replace mine... I must've sat in the garage starring at it for like half an hour saying "There's no one way I'm going to have to take off the tires to change the headlights"... Well I did. Guess she's a little low.
  10. Personally 918 is my favorite color. Mine is 918 originally and was repainted about 15 years ago. http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=25841&ppuser=2476 http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=25840&ppuser=2476 http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=25839&ppuser=2476 http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=25833&ppuser=2476 Here is one from ZCON 2010... http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=34340&ppuser=2476 Also, something you may be interested in is that in 2003 Nissan did a limited edition color run on the Xterra here in the states. The color was called Atomic Orange (color code A16 I believe) and I purchased a tube of touch up paint from the dealer and used it on a few spots on the Z... Identical color.
  11. Me too!
  12. Wow Kenny! Spectacular. I get updates on this thread via email which previews the text but doesn't show pictures... well when I read 'Duplicolor truck bedliner' I was like, Geez what a bad idea. But boy was I wrong! That looks great and I can't wait do mine. Thanks for posting!
  13. Thanks Rob- I'll keep ya in mind. I don't think I'll do the full gauge replacement for another year or two when I do the full restore... but I may start the gathering process soon.
  14. I WASN'T aware.... hmmmm... let me check them out again... Thanks!
  15. Hey Bo- Nice install. Guess you had no need for climate controls? Neat placement for extra gauges. I would like to find a asthetically pleasing place for 1 more gauge and still keep the climate controls. Checked out those gauges the other day... not really my style. They actually seem a little hard to read... too busy I think. I saw where someone had made a comment regarding Autometer v. Speedhut/Revolution gauges "some prefer vanilla, while others prefer chocolate". Well, I prefer mint chocolate chip, but if my options are between vanilla and chocolate then it's vanilla everytime. Thanks!
  16. In the past I've stayed away from HybridZ... thought it really wasn't my cup o' tea... but they really have the gauge deal worked out. Here is a link... http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php?showtopic=63713 I really like the idea of the LED's to replace the turn signals and highbeam indicator.
  17. Pictures will definetly follow. All the searching that I've done yields bits n' pieces of info but nothing solid and all or mostly inclusive. I was really trying to use this thread as a vehicle for all things Auto Meter here at classiczcar.com but so far that's not working out so well. When I finally get around to the full Auto Meter install I'll be sure to write up an info/how to/compendeum since no one else is being forthcoming.
  18. Hey y'all! I've been away for a bit. Doing some stuff to my Frontier instead of taking care of my Z like I should. Lately I've been having some issues with the Water Temp/Oil PSI gauge combo... they only work when they want to... gauge light and all. Since I figure it's probably just a bad connection it's time to pull the dash. And since the dash is going to be out I figure I'll go ahead and do the dash crack repair. But maybe since the dash is going to be out now is the time to grab the Auto Meter gauges that I really want in my finished project... or at least figure out which gauges to get and how to install. - I'm thinking Sport Comp or Sport Comp II... but haven't ruled out Pro Comp. - Which gauges are electrical and which ones are mechanical? - Which size to buy? 5" speedo and tach and 2 5/8" for the rest? - I consider all 4 gauges in the center to be necessary and the clock is getting the boot... but that only leaves 3 holes for 4 gauges... where to put the 4th? - Any words of wisdom for the install? - Who's got pics? Post them up! Thanks!
  19. Austin wasn't an option this time around... San Antonio was though. I have family scattered all over Texas and I am originally from Corpus, so it's just a matter of time before I end up somewhere in the state. But this time around it's "The Crossroads of America" in "The Hoosier State"! FWIW- I prefer Indy to F1, Grand Am to Indy, and American Le Mans over them all... so I guess I'll be making my way over to Mid-Ohio and Road America while I'm up there!
  20. Awesome, Thanks Walter. I just registered at the site and told the wife that starting in a year to make sure the 2nd Thursdays stay open.
  21. Hey guys... just got back from out of town. The wife and I are really excited about the move, but unfortunately it won't take place 'till around next June. Carl- We appreciate your offers and I'm sure we will be in contact in the near future... especially in the wife's job field! Carl and Steve- We are talking about a trip up that way in the next few months so that we can check out the area. I look forward to being able to meet up with y'all!
  22. Gee, Thanks Bruce...not sure that's helpful, but I'll take what I can get Indy was actually my #2 choice - #1 was Denver, so I could buy a house where I could see the mountains.
  23. I just received orders to U.S. Coast Guard Recruiting Station Indianapolis, IN. I'm pretty stoked about it too! I like what I've been reading online and the area looks to have plenty to offer my family and I. So how about the Indy Z Club? Are you guys pretty active? I plan on being heavily involved and also to complete a full resto-mod on my 240 at some point during my four years there. I could really use some advice on the best areas to consider moving to. Fishers seems pretty good, wide range of house values. My wife is a licensed Vet Tech and can pretty much get a job in any suburban area. My son will be starting school shortly after moving up there so naturally a good school district is important. I will be working at the recruiting office which looks to be located in the Castleton area.?. Any pointers and info would be greatly appreciated!
  24. Ron- Thanks for the heads up... do you happen to know why the different types? NA vs. Turbo or year model? Something like that?
  25. Good info... Thanks Mike! I may get back with you about that mount if I can't find them both together elsewhere. So now I'm looking for a mount AND an adjustment plate.
