compression Baaad. now what?
Potentially. Your front carb could be overly rich (and likely is, based on what you described). Have a conversation with Bruce Palmer about that. Go re-run your compression test and let us know the revised numbers. I think you'll be surprised!

compression Baaad. now what?
Nope. You did it wrong... that's why your numbers are so screwy... Warm engine to normal operating temp. Remove all spark plugs. Wedge throttle to wide open. Conduct your compression test, preferably with a screw-in type of tester. Your numbers should now be accurate.

First, describe how you conducted the test.... If done incorrectly, you will get real erroneous readings...

Transmission Help--4th not working
Drive it any speed you can get away with. The L- engines will run all day at most any RPM you choose to drive. The 1 to 2 RPM to speed ratio (3000 to 60)is what a 4-speed manual tranny would produce. Drive it at 80. It's a lot more fun there....

Leaky sunroof- replacement that does not leak?
Replace the roof. It is flimsy to begin with and with the sunroof removing any residual strength the roof may have, you're gonna have flexing and constant leakage. Use the search function and you'll find a bunch on roof replacements. Good luck!

Restoration Suggestions
You may want to scour some junk yards for 260s and use the door trim panels you may find. That'd be a lot easier and give you a better fit and finish.... besides, you can remove the vinyl from them and apply your own selection.

Transmission Help--4th not working
Plus your axle ratio could have been messed with to make it "seem" like what you describe.

Tail light problem
Physically check your fuses with an ohmmeter. They can look good, but be bad. Take them out of the holder to do this.

Z winter driving- bad idea or possible?
Get anything, but keep your Z out of salt. It'll kill it.

Where should I get my first job?
Expect to begin at the lowest position on the totem pole. A management position as your first, entry-level job WILL NOT HAPPEN, so set your sights a bit more realistically. Unless you possess particularly valuable talents, you can expect minimum wage or perhaps a bit more, depending.

Wheels and Tires
Ditto what Julio and Carl said. 16s are the way to go if you don't mind getting away from the stock wheel size.

Where should I get my first job?
Forget applying on-line. Ya gotta look 'em in the eye.

Where should I get my first job?
You'll be needing parts. Why not try to get a job at a Nissan dealer or auto parts store?

The Tree
That was an option in 2008. Self-shielding sunroof with drip rails....

Check your auto-transmission fluid level. Sounds like either you're very low on fluid or your tranny's taken a big crap.

Can you help a lady out with some info??
Yes. My preferred tire brand for my Z is Yokohama and I like the S-Drive series.

building up your L24 ?? wishlist creation help
No, I haven't, Steve. I gotta get those Mikunis jetted before another dyno run. And yes, the dyno crew's tailpipe sniffer only went as low as 9.4 and I was richer than that. Phew! Stinky rich. The best run I got was 131 HP @ 6700. I know the car, properly tuned, is capable of roughly 180 HP, possibly more. It takes more than 131 to get to 135 mph, and it's been there-done that.

New ride 1972 Datsun 240Z
Value is but one consideration. The Z (S30) is an excellent styling exercise in it's own right but tastes change over time. Aside from the G-nose Z, the stock configuration has aero problems at speeds above most speed limits. The addition of a front air dam of some sort will settle the car down thus improving safety and driveability, hence increasing the FQ. I agree completely with Zedyone's comment about retaining the L24. A Z just isn't a Z without an in-line six.

New to actually getting my paws on a Z car
Hey, Ziggy, welcome to the forum. If you've got any questions about how to do this, that, or the other, you've come to the right place. Use of the search function will give you immediate answers to a lot of your questions, as there aren't too many mysteries about the old Z cars that haven't been solved. Of course, if you cannot find the answer using search, then ask away. BTW, if you've got some snaps of your car, their always appreciated, especially when you're asking a question about a certain part, procedure, etc. Besides, we never get tired of looking at Zs!

Morton Crashes...
Just got this email……and we were just talking to him a couple of weeks ago in Nashville ! SCARY CRASH: Morton wrecks his dream car, but he should be OK By DAVID COFFIN Herald Correspondent 8/15/2010 Updated: 8/16/2010 Emergency crews clean up the remains of a 1958 Scarab Sports Racer after driver John Morton rolled the vehicle between Turns 2 & 3. Morton was taken away by ambulance. · Popular American race car driver John Morton was involved in a scary crash on the opening lap of Group 3A for 1955/61 Sports Cars over 2000cc that silenced a large & sun-baked crowd at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Saturday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. But Morton was able to climb out of his car & wave to the crowd as he entered an ambulance to be transported to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. Morton, of El Segundo (CA), was driving his dream car, a 1958 Scarab Sports Racer, when he wound up sideways in the entrance to Turn 2 & was broadsided on the driver's side, sending the car rolling & landing in the dirt on the side of the track wheels up. Morton, who was competing in his 3rd race of the day as the Reunion got down to the serious business of competition Saturday afternoon, was apparently only shaken up & taken to CHOMP for observation. He had already run in Group 7L (the 1st of 10 races on the day), finishing 6th in a 1970 Datsun 510, & Group 1A where he brought home a 1961 Porsche RS 61 in 4th. He's also entered in 2 Group B races, as the weekend extravaganza that includes more than 600 cars winds up w/9 more races this afternoon (after qualifying races in the morning). Press Snoop (Lynne Hunting) reported that the Trans-Am Datsun Morton competed in to open the afternoon has been in a museum & is the car w/which Morton won the 1971 & 1972 Trans-Am Under 2.0L Championship in its final years of racing. She also noted, "Morton made that car w/Peter Brock & it is still original, w/no updates." In Group 1A, the 2nd race of the day, Morton was supposed to be running against Sir Stirling Moss, who just acquired a 1961 Porsche RS 61. Drippy fog to start the day Friday morning put a damper on early practice (1A was 1st on the course) & Moss (w/the combination of wet track & cold tires) spun out on the 1st lap & was hit be another car, which had also spun. "It was sad for both Moss & Morton, who had always dreamed of racing Moss (an icon in the sport)." Most years of the vintage competition at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the race for 1966/72 Trans-Am Cars (the big boys w/the throaty V8s) is one of the most thrilling & Saturday was no different. Bruce Canepa of Scotts Valley, Tomy Drissi of Los Angeles & Ken Epsman of Saratoga put on a heck of a show, trading positions on virtually every lap. Canepa was in a 1969 Ford Mustang & pulled away from the other 2 exiting Turn 11 on the final lap to win by a scant 0.871 seconds. Drissi, a veteran of professional Trans-Am competition, out-dragged Epsman to the finish line to just nose him out for 2nd. Drissi was in a 1970 Chevrolet Camaro & Epsman was piloting his 1970 Dodge Challenger. Qualifying races begin at 8AM this morning w/9 more races, after a lunch break, this afternoon. Tickets still remain available & can be purchased at the gate for what promises to be another thriller of a day w/some incredible cars well-matched in their respective groups.
