If keeping the 1970 style master cylinder is important to you and you don't mind spending a bit more than the cost of a '72 replacement MC, give a call to White Post Restorations. They can resleeve your '70 MC with a stainless steel insert and give you a lifetime warranty. Dennis

How long did it take for the ABS cement to dry when you used it with the fiberglass joint tape? Single thin coat or several coats? Dennis

When the car isn't running, how loose does the shift lever feel when you wiggle it around without changing gears? The Nissan plastic shift lever bushings are still available and inexpensive. There are three to change - the two on the pivot point and one at the base of the shift lever. Dennis Dennis

Is it normal? No. Sign of problems to come? Don't know. Have you checked the bushings at the base of the shifter lever? Worn bushings cause a,rattle and a loose feeling shifter. Dennis

Fill the rivet holes with wood putty and stain the wheel a uniform color? Or, pop for a new steering wheel if it bothers you a great deal. A good looking and feeling steering wheel is a key part of any car and driving experience. Dennis

My '71 Z is currently in the shop having the rear wheel bearings replaced. I found some good advice in various threads on this site and gave my mechanic a copy of the FSM section on replacing the rear bearings. I also gave him an illustrated parts breakdown sheet showing all parts and order of assembly, Now for the problem. The bearings need to have shims and the old shims are not filling the space. He's checked the usual sources, dealer, MSA, and no one has shims. It was suggested he try a junk yard. Anyone have experience or suggestions with rear wheel bearing shims? Dennis

The ABS cement with fiberglass mat is a good tip to know. Does it ooze through the crack to the face of the panel or is it thick like fiberglass resin? Dennis

Thanks! I used a fine tip SILVER Sharpie pen. If you try it, just drag the SIDE of the Sharpie pen along the edge you want to highlight - easier than it sounds. Dennis

My experience with console repair has been to cover cracked and stressed areas with fiberglass cloth on the backside of the unit. I've used two part epoxy putty to fill holes. Works well and looks good after a fresh coat of paint and a little touch up highlighting. I don't think I'd try plastic pipe glue. See pictures here: Dennis

My Z is also an April '71 build and it came with a metal fan which went through the radiator around 1979 when the water pump failed. I replaced it with a lighter weight metal flex fan and no clutch at the time, but now have a plastic fan and clutch Dennis.

Living in the desert, I've tinted windows on the family sedan, but not the Z. Tinting does keep the interior much cooler, plus I like the look. For the Z, I prefer a rear window louver. Tint film has the ability to pull the rear glass defroster grid off the glass which is a major downside for me. If you go with tint film, check local laws on which windows and how dark for tinting. Laws and tint shops often have different opinions. Dennis

Ahh, the visual inspection. In the days when my 1970 Porsche still had to be smog tested, it would pass the sniffer test, but not the visual test due to some items not being on the engine carb linkage. Couldn't find all the necessary bits and pieces the smog referee insisted on, so I put Historic license plates on the car and never had to go through smog testing again. I'm glad those days are behind us. Dennis

I have a need.....a need to vent. When I log into the Classiczcars site and click on "Unread Content" to see what's going on in the Z community, nine of the first 25 posts are ebay listings posted by "Bender". I don't want to see ebay posts by "Bender". I've tried blocking "Bender" posts, but that doesn't seem to work. Wading through the crap posts to get to the interesting reading that draws me to the site is a less than pleasant experience. If anyone has a suggestion on how to block the unwanted posts, please let me know. I find myself coming back to this site less frequently than before this issue developed. I used to enjoy the Z content and interaction much more than now when a third of the posts are ebay redirects. I will now slide my soapbox back under my desk and await any suggestions. Maybe I'm the only one who is annoyed. Dennis

If you do a search on this site, you'll find several threads on hose replacement. Most of them indicate how to work around hoses that are no longer available by using easy to find fuel rated hose and elbows and kink reducers. My tank was done a couple months ago based on information found on this forum. There's a wealth of help if you're willing to look for it. Plus, you'll get that warm fuzzy feeling of accomplishment from doing something on your own. Give it a try! Dennis

Before I had my carbs rebuilt a few months ago, I opened and resealed the float bowls several times to check floats and valves. As mentioned, the thin cork gaskets are reusable to a point. Replacements were just a dollar and change from my local Nissan dealer. They do seem to prefer being handled by tiny hands and sometimes get a little twisty. As with about everything else on a Z patience helps. Dennis
