  1. I finally got all the tar coating off the 73's floor boards today and only found these small areas of rust. The rest of the floor is solid with the minimal surface rust you see. Can this small of an area be patched without welding or should I cut it out and let someone weld in a patch.... Thanks for any suggestions. PS.....Here's an updated picture of the "Z Cave" hopefully will be finished end of next week. Cheers, Randy
  2. I am done with the 71........Long road on the 73.

Now it's back with a lower BIN........$6950. I would assume thats a fair price for 383, or is it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1969-240z-production-number-383-COLLECTORS-VERY-RARE_W0QQitemZ220275877517QQihZ012QQcategoryZ6187QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I noticed on the Datsun color charts 901 is called Silver and Silver Metallic...Was it a metallic from the factory or just a silver enamel? I will be painting the 73 I picked up last week in the near future and the original color is 901, I will be going back with that color but wasn't sure if certain years had metallic while others didn't. Thanks, Randy PS.....If you have a 901 silver post up a picture please.
  6. Hey guys, Thanks for the info, especially the link. I think in time I will just replace the flats for the round. Ah, the joys of 240z carbs..........
  7. Over the last few days I have cleaned out the tank and lines, fuel filter, oil etc and went for the first start just a moment ago. The car fired right, but took 8-10 tries before it was ideling. I have not attached the air filter yet so I noticed when it was running gas was coming out of the area I circled in Red on the carbs. Is this normal? I fully admit I'm still learning on the mechanical side so I'm not sure if this is a normal function or if the gas should be going somewhere else. I was concerned that if the exhaust got hot all that dripping would help remove my eyebrows.....:stupid: Thanks for any input. Randy PS, it's the 73 I just brought home on Thursday.

Dangly.....maybe were long lost brothers. Carl, the package racking is on my list, I'm actually going to look at some used ones this weekend. Bre, She's been here in TN hiding, about 25 miles from Knoxville. I found her by pure chance from talking with a friend who new a friend, who new somebody that had an old car in the basement, etc......We finally hooked up and her she is.

I will hopefully get it back to a 2+ or 3- as far as the "resto / refurbish" Walter your close, it's a 1963 356B. I'll try and get some better pictures this weekend after I get a chance to knock off some of the dust and mildew.

Just got the 1973 240 unloaded. This car has been in a basement for years and needs lots of TLC. It was a one owner car with very minimal rust. It has had several repaints as the original owner painted it different colors for each kid that drove it. PO stated it ran fine when parked 6 years ago. Original color is Silver. This is going to be a great project, especially when I get the "Z cave" finished. Here's a few pictures as I found her, hopefully I can get the cobwebs off tomorrow. Randy

Car looks good......what type of damage did you have during trasport. Here's my old 918 Orange after 2 years of work, yours will be there before you know it. Enjoy your project. Randy

More progress, and I pick up the 73 tomorrow.......... Looks like the four post lift is out of the picture, however I plan on getting one of these......I also saw a portable ML-6 by Bend Pac, has anyone seen this one before, searching the web doesn't turn up a whole lot. http://www.eagleequip.com/page/EE/PROD/LI-ML/MD-6XP http://www.asedeals.com/portable_lift.html

I'm actually using a contractor, but he is a close friend and I'm part time cheap labor. The post lift is still in the plans but not 100% The ceiling height is 9 feet except on one side where we left it open to the loft, that would be where the lift goes. I've looked at several lifts including the mobile version that gets you 48 to 53 inches in the air. Does anyone have any experience with this version? Of course this morning we were going to set the trusses and put on the roof but Trpoical Storm Faye is dumping buckets of rain, so we may have to wait. I'll throw up some pictures on Friday.

, it's so funny you asked, I actually test fitted the 356, TR6 and my 240 and will have plenty of room for the upcoming 73. 5 can be done but with unique jacking and moving. I do need a sign that says "No SUV's allowed"..........

After years of going back and forth I finally decided to build the Z cave. A detached 24x24 garage with a loft area. My wife is actually excited that she gets her garage back before winter. I also just purchased an original owner 1973 240Z that I will be picking up on Thursday, so the garage is perfect timing. I'll post some pictures of the Z when I get it home, and more of the "cave" when it's finished. The Z will need lots of TLC........

That makes perfect sense, I wasnt thinking in terms of doing each panel I think I just got excited about starting a new adventure. When I pick up the car Thursday I will post several photos, hopefully you guys can give me a clear direction in which to proceed. It may in fact not need to be stripped all the way down, but I would have no idea. One of the main reasons for buying this car was to give me more "on the job training" since I hopefully won't be able to make things any worse. Of course I'll have a better idea when I can get the car here and give it a good pressure washing and better look.

Hey Brian, Yes I'm picking her up on Thursday and will get some pictures when I get it home. Thanks for all the responses guys, once you see the car you'll know why I want to strip it. It's an original owner with no rust issues save the battery and three re-paints. It should keep me busy all Fall and Winter. Since I have never stripped a car I'm actually looking forward to the work. PS....Jim, thanks for the link.

Hey guys, I plan on spending the Fall stripping all the old paint off a 1973 240 and have a really stupid question. Once I take off the paint will the car begin to rust on the surface? I figure this will be a several week project on the weekends and wasn't sure if what I'm planning to do is the right way to go about it. I have never done this before, but it seems I remember someone saying once a car is stripped it needs to be primed ASAP. What is the correct way to do this. I just want to get all the old paint off and see what areas need to be repaired, but don't want to paint the car right away. Thanks for any help
  20. Thanks Ron, I just have so little experience with body work that I wanted some expert advice. I didn't think it was a major issue but you never know, always best to get those with more experience to have a look. I'll let you know if I purchase the car. Randy
  21. Thanks guys, Yes, it is a car I'm considering buying, it's basically rust free except for the battery spot. Here's a photo of mine, I circled the area in question in red. On the Z I'm considering imagine where I circled that the whole area there is basically gone. I didn't think it was a structural issue, but wanted to be sure. My idea was just welding in a patch or getting something fabbed to match close. The car is a 1973 original owner with no stories, except it has been repainted about three times, it even still has the wonderful 73 carbs. I'm thinking of purchasing and spending all Winter on it. Floors, rockers, fenders, doglegs are in great shape, no rust. Needs interior, minor engine work, paint, etc, etc.....wait, what am I thinking...... Am truly considering just because it's rust free.
  22. Thanks Ron, Yes, I have no problem finding the rust or looking in the most prone areas.......my weekness is after finding it figuring out the severity and cost. I wasn't sure if this battery area near the fender would be a "run away" sign or if even a "patch" could be fashioned in that hole.
  23. Got a quick question for the rust experts..... I have found a very straight 1973 240Z with no rust issues except at the battery tray area. When you pull the battery out there is basically a big hole that allows you to look right at the right front fender. The firewall looks fine, but that huge hole has me worried. Is that an expensive fix? Is it structural in any way or was that just some light sheet metal thats now gone. I would post a picture but I didn't have my camera. If you can just imagine standing in front of the car and looking to the left of the battery and seeing a huge cantelope size hole, thats where the problem is. Thanks for any input.
  24. Yep, your right no pay and pull.....or else I would love to have the rotting low vin thats sitting in the mud...... He's great about meeting you at the yard as long as you set it up ahead of time, just call him or leave a message, he usually gets back in a timely manner. Walk in's arn't a good idea as it would be hit or miss.

DON'T SELL THE Z! In 20 years you will be kicking yourself. Just keep it stored and have it driven on occassion until you have the space. And there is nothing wrong with owning two cars.....Heck I have three classics and will most likely add another this Fall. Good luck in school, Randy PS....Here's the adopted Triplets.........
