  • Under the Hood Car came with the L24 engine rebuilt at ~125k miles and modified with the 4BL 390cfm Holley. Installed a Mallory Unilite Breakerless Distributor with Mallory Promaster Coil and MSD 6A ignition box - keep my plugs gapped at 0.060 inch. Added a Manual choke (in Arizona - none was needed) such that the stock choke light and lever function in the center console interior. Installed an external Oil Cooler to help keep the engine cooler (photo 3). Updated to a 60amp '82 280zx alternator and added the HLH and PLH 12v relay harnesses by Dave Irwin. Additonally added a 12v starter relay to minimize those starter "clicks' on Hot Days in summer. I use a battery tender harness attached for quick connect/disconnect keeping by battery fully charged. Currently average 20-21 MPG and best ever highway for a 300 mile day trip was 27 MPG.
  • Wheels & Tires I've spent some time and money on tire sizes and finally a new suspension rebuild over the past 5 years. Originally the car came with Yokohama 205/50/15 tires (1st photo) on the ~12yr old MSA Chrome 15x7 rims. Love the rims, hated the tires. I updated to BFG g-Force Sport 205/60/15 tires in 2007(photo 2), however never did like the road noise which these tires were noted for. This past fall, 2009 prior to my suspension rebuild I installed 205/65/15 Bridgestone Potenza Pole Positions - really like the tire(photo 3). Noise and ride is a great balance of firmness with responsiveness. My tire is about 0.7 inch larger than stock, where as 205/60/15 (0.8 inch smaller) would be a closer to stock size. Speedo reads a bit low by ~3% ... actual speed is 62 MPH when speedo reads 60 MPH.
  • Suspension Installed 4 wheel disc brakes, '82 Toyota 4-Runner 4x4 discs on the front and '82 Nissan Maxima discs on the rear and just love them. Next installed all new urethane bushings from MSA throughout the car. In 2009 rebuilt and realigned my rear end with adjustable custom made Toe/Camber vertical braces(photo 1). My rear total toe was ~2X (~0.80 degrees) upper spec limit of 0.46 degrees while also being rotated ~0.40 degrees such that it dog-tracked. I noticed my passenger rear tire wore excessively and my steering wheel after alignment could never be squared up when driving straight. Photo 2 & 3 shows my manual alignment approach using a Plumb line, Tee Square, 5ft Straight Edge and Trigonometry. Once rebuilt - I took it in for a professional alignment at the Nissan dealership giving me rear-end data. This allowed me to re-adjust and bring the rear end well inside the spec range for Toe & Camber using simple Trig. Additionally I installed all New MSA strut mount insulators, spacers/bearings, Tokico HP shocks with Eibach 280z Progressive coils such that the rear is now stock height and the front is ~0.75 inch lower as I removed 1.5 coils from the top of the front Eibachs. The car rides stiff but comfortable without squatting under acceleration - I like it .. so does my wife!
