Friend of mine is having an issue with his all stock 78 280Z. The car idles fine on start up but when driven the idle drops and dies when he comes to a stop. Other than this it runs fine. Any suggestions on where we should start looking. We have deleted the bcdd and this didn’t seem to help.

Is the engine fully warmed up before taking off for the drive? The auxiliary air valve holds idle speed up until the engine warms up completely . Sounds like he's taking off with the engine cold and the basic idle setting is too low. Turn the big screw on the throttle body to raise idle speed. You can do it by hand.

And the thing with the game piece on it is what keeps the throttle from slamming shut. If that's been deleted that might cause a problem. It's not a vacuum nipple, it just looks like one.

Another possibility. The TPS vane contacts will stick sometimes. Pull the cover off and have a look. Look for spider webs and moisture like he may have pressure washed the engine bay recently. Here's a good read that explains the way it works.

Something else to check for basic fuel pressure, the hose coming out of the fuel filter up front going to the fuel rail should be really hard to pinch if it has good pressure. Kind of sounds like it's loosing fuel pressure under load???
