Sounds like it's going to ground, or more sensibly sounding not going to ground.

here's good read.  No teflon tape and bad sending units abound. 

 

you have the idiot light sensor, not the gauge sensor.

no pressure, contacts closed light comes on, with pressure contacts open, light goes off.
