I am in need of a 280zx shifter for my 82 5speed swap. I was sent a Z shifter with my trans and I just noticed that that wont work. It a S style shifter. I can trade if you want to trade otherwise I am open to a Sale

Are you sure?  There is a ton on the site about using the 280Z shifters on the ZX 5 speeds with no problems.  And a lot about how the ZX shifter doesn't work well in the Z's.

Can't remember what car you're putting the trans in though.

Going into a 280Z I will have to test it out!

Here's a good thread with lots of information.  You might need to grind a small notch in the base of the shift lever.  Beside that, it should work fine.  Install new bushings.

 

The inner rubber and outer pleather boots won't jive with a zx stock shifter.  They're straight up where the boots are angled toward the rear of the car.  I ground a notch in front and the backside on a Z shifter, works great now.  Before it would pop out of 5th and reverse.

I will have to grind down my shifter then thanks for the detail very helpful.
