I thought I would throw this out to the smartest group of mechanics I know. I am working on a diesel 4 cylinder that is Japanese made and came out of an old New Holland skidsteer. It threw a rod and I am exploring rebuilding it but haven't ever built a diesel before. Anyone here have any experience? These get expensive quick and I don't want to go through all the motions and still not have a running engine...any advice?

That is a pretty big hole. How is the cylinder bore? Would it need to be sleeved?

That block is trash. Welding won't work because of the stress lines in the block. Also diesels run 22:1 compression so they put a lot of stress into the block. I have sourced another block, almost $1000. I was working on getting the crank out, which comes out the back of the block, which would be another $1000 if it's not salvageable...

i was being optimistic. Sorry can't be of much help.  I've owned a SD22, small yanmar, vw TDI but have never had to rebuild.

That's a pricey block you got there. Too bad you can't put another kind of engine in it. I saw a datsun sd22 complete engine and trans setup go for 700 on ebay.

Some people have repowered with reefer engines but it is complicated, requires fabrication and the replacement makes less power...
