If you are going to use thick spacers, be sure your wheel studs are long enough and I wouldn't recommend being too aggressive with the car

Sorry to be late.  Did you get the car running?  One thing that would help spare the starter is to pull the distributor and just spin it with the key on.  The injectors are triggered from the distributor.  I don't have a 1978 280 any more to check stuff on for you, but have worked on the problem you have.
