Replacing Gas Cap

Hi everyone,

so I'm considering buying a new fuel filler cap because the one on my car right now does not lock into place (it merely sits on top of hole) and when the gas tank is relatively full, or full, and I take a hard turn fast, gas will leak out and spill slightly. Moreover, people can easily syphon my gas out.

I have attached pictures to show what my current cap looks like. I don't believe it's a complete piece, as I don't have the locking key which there is a slot for, nor does the bottom of the cap (as pictured) have any tabs or arms to lock it into the plate in the body.

My question then is, what type of gas cap can I buy that would lock into place? I see different types for sale online (some of which look like the one I already have), but I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this themselves and found one that fits right. Thank you!

MSA specifically says on their website that the 70-78 locking caps aren't available. This thread describes an alternative, though I don't know how difficult to find. Since it looks like reddat has one listed on eBay, they might be available elsewhere. He does put quite a premium on his parts.

Yeah, I was right. It is available cheaper.

Sometimes it's not what comes out, but what goes in. I'm reminded of a friend's little boy who came into the kitchen and said, "Mommy, I filled your gas tank for you." Sure enough, he had filled it very carefully with sand. And then there are big people who can put things in your tank. It doesn't happen but once in a very blue moon to some unlucky person, but it does happen.

Oddly, I doubt someone would drain off your tank with the bolt on the bottom. The universal tool of choice is still a rubber hose. Maybe that will change, but I never heard of anyone draining from the bottom back in the 70's when people were having their gas stolen. Generally speaking, thieves are incredibly stupid.
