cost of an E88 head rebuild

Featured Replies

I have a E88 head I'm getting rebuilt. The shop is charging me $305 for the work minus the cost of the valve stems. Does this sound reasonable?

Yup. I have an E88 on my bench now that I was planning to get rebuilt. I figured it would be about $400 by the time we got all the new guides, valve and springs for it to. I think the machinist I was going to use wanted $350 or so for his part.

Again Arne...is there anything you don't know? :)

And yes, it does sound reasonable.

That sounds right in the ballpark. I recently got a quote from a local machine shop (one that did work for me 35 years ago w/same ownership - knows & remembers what an L24 is!).... Was quoted $400.00+- worst case scenario, likely something less. Likely the most trustworthy shop within a 50 mile radius of me in south-central Pennsylvania.

I paid 3 bills to have my head shaved .030 on the bottom, .010 on the top, 6 intake valve seats replaced (I provided the seats), and two stud holes filled and retapped.

If they are replacing all your guides I'd say $300 bucks is about right.

the price includes cleaning, new seals, valve guides, but if I need any other work like fixing cracks and new valve stems are extra. this even includes his labor costs.

:pirate: Yes, the price isn't that bad. I cracked three valve seats in a E31 head and it cost me that much.
