E31 head

Featured Replies

I'm looking at an E31 head....anyone know what a reasonable price is for one these days....used, good shape just needs to be cleaned up and new valves etc.

thanks

$100-$150 I'd say. Take a close look at the coolant passages where the head meets the block. They like to corrode on the E31 for some reason, maybe different metallurgy than the later heads or something.

I've been offered $200 by one guy (several times) for the spare E31 that I have. I still haven't sold it to him.

There's a guy in my area who'll sell you a whole L24 for $200, with the E31 on it. Problem is, the engine is out of a 73, so I fear the head may have been milled before.

Yeah, I'm not too surprised, thats probably not a bad deal if it hasn't been milled too much.

I bought an 70,000 mile L24 w/ an unmilled, small chamber (E31 style) E88 head, a Type B trans, an R180 diff and some other assorted parts for $200. Having that Engine/Head rebuilt allowed me to save my E31, and the original engine from my car for a later project.

I probably value my E31 more than most people would, but that's fine with me since I want to keep it.

Yeah, the best way to get those heads is by getting a complete engine - much cheaper that way. I too picked up an unmilled small chamber E88 on a nice L24 block, for $100 in my case. And that also included a flywheel I needed, as well as a good hatch support strut and a decent pair of 240Z taillights. I figure I did OK.
