I've seen them pop up several times now on Yahoo Auctions Japan and always with a hefty price tag... What are they?

They are genuine 'works' Mazda race team wheels, made from magnesium. Mid-Seventies period.

I've purchased from this seller before, so I think you can trust him.

Katayama RX3 race replica would be fun, wouldn't it?

Yes Ed, they are painted red. Natural bare cast magnesium colour is dark grey ( and oxidises very easily ).
