Posted May 4, 200421 yr comment_79580 I'm getting ready to work on my diff and as I was looking at it I remembered that i've always had a problem with the fluids coming out of the vent. This is my second diff and i've always made certain to not overfill. Back when my car was running I would wash the diff every now and then with a high pressure hose to get the oil/crud off. Then after a couple of months it would be there again. I noticed on my Chevy truck there is a two foot hose attached to the diff that goes up with the vent cap at the end of the hose. Now I'm wondering do I just have a case of bad luck when it comes to my diff's leaking or is this a common problem? And what do you guys think about putting a piece of hose to the top of the diff? May 4, 200421 yr comment_79584 Hey Ed, gently pry the breather out of the rear cover and clean it out. In my generic differential manual it says that a clogged breather can actually cause oil leakage as the pressure builds up and forces oil out wherever it can past the breather. I know it sounds crazy but that's what the book says. I havent done this in awhile but I think the lower hole in the breather has to be positioned a certain way in the cover. Much luck, Chris Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/11560-differential-air-vent/#findComment-79584 Share on other sites
May 9, 200421 yr Author comment_80256 I got it out and blew through it. It seemed pretty clean to me. No obstructions of any kind. I don't know what it is. Does anyone else's leak? May 9, 200421 yr comment_80258 Ed, I just threaded the back cover ind installed aeroquip fittings and hose to a catch can (puke can). All my breathers and overflow goes to the same catch can.You could easily just slip a hose and a band clamp over the plastic pipe (take the cap off first) and run the hose to any location (with, or without a container). A low cost container could even just be a beer can (drink the beer first!).
