Need some advice about a 78 280z that has been sitting for 5 years
Before you try to start it, do a search here for a thread titled "waking the sleeping beast" which is full of advise on how to properly resurrect an engine that hasn't run in years. If you simply change the gas, hook up a new battery and crank it up, you could do enough damage to the engine (especially rings and bores) to require an engine tear down. This needs to be addressed systematically if you hope to not have to rebuild or replace the engine.

Stock Spring Length
Overall spring length has very little to do with how much they will lower the car. Spring rate is far more important, and you can't tell that from the length, wire dimeter, or number of coils. For example, Eibach springs for a 240Z (typically metallic black in color, and labeled 'Eibach' on the springs) lower a 240Z by an inch or more, and are about the same length as stock. Tokico springs also lower a 240Z about the same amount, but are so much shorter than stock that spring compressors are not needed to change them.

Another tranny swap question.
Gary is correct, the 2+2's had a larger diameter flywheel, as did (I think) manual transmission factory turbos. Other than that, all the same.

Known problems with '80 5-speeds?
The synchro ring is about $30. I routinely replace them just because whenever I have a transmission that far apart. Especially the first and second gear synchros, as those two get the bulk of the wear.

I got mine at the dealer. I'm pretty certain that they are all the same, both four and five speeds. But disassembling a transmission is not for the faint of heart.

Loop pile carpet, any recent purchases? (2008)
Shoot the messenger? Not hardly, Bryan. What you posted here makes huge sense. After all, why should we think there would be any consistency in the carpet style and materials in 240Zs? Nothing else was consistent.Shoot, everyone always says that 240Zs should have loop pile carpet. But there are obviously varying degrees of "loop-ness" to the carpet. The pictures of the different carpets posted in this thread show that clearly. Look at the pictures Jim posted just above -- very "loopy". The pictures from Mike's '72 look to have pretty defined loops too. Yet some of the '71s (like mine) show some loop-effect, yet the overall effect is almost that of plush cut pile. Heck, I had thought for months after I bought the car that mine were replacements, simply because it wasn't an obvious loop pile carpet. Only recently did it become apparent that mine are still original as well. This certainly supports Les' statement that "...back in Japan they made the carpet kits using what they had available..." as we are seeing the direct evidence in pictures here. This truly complicates my choice of replacement carpet. If I want to maintain the original style of my car as close as possible (and I do), loop carpet may not be my best choice. I may want to go with cut pile on mine to be as close as possible to what it came with. Because cut pile may look closer to my original than loop. Pictures of mine are attached. Not only does the pile on mine not match yours, Jim, the jute is not stitched to the carpet at all, but is separate. I can remove my carpet and the jute still lays in the car. I'm thinking of selling my current camera to get a new one, Jim. Le tme know and I'll make you a deal!

Known problems with '80 5-speeds?
Sounds like the second gear syncho ring is worn to me. Not an uncommon problem with any used manual transmission, probably not year specific. When you consider how many miles most of these transmissions have on them by now, why should it surprise us? My '71 4 speed was the same way. I replaced all the synchro rings when I had it apart for bearing replacement, shifts into second (and all gears) beautifully now.

'72 240Z at Barrett Jackson
VW convertibles regularly go for more that similar condition 240Zs. Sad, but true.

WTB lug nuts
Any parts house that sells Dorman products can get a repro version, locally they run about $2.50 each. Better than the dealer if you can't find used ones.

Key codes
Dan, send a PM to Jim (Zup), as I think he is who I sent the sticker from my yellow car to. It was still quite readable. Can't find a picture of it right now.

Signed by Mr. K and its only $275
Yeah, I'll admit to that. We're lucky to live where there is still a reasonable selection of 240Zs left. So here's a question that puzzles me a bit. Why don't more Easterners buy these affordable West Coast cars and ship them back East? Sure, shipping would add $800-1000, but you might still come out ahead.

Determining how car was equipped from factory
Bad news, Tom. While the British kept almost all records of this type (I had a Heritage Certificate for my MG), Datsun/Nissan has no similar information available.

Shift Boot retention...
Yes Bryan, it is. More pictures in the thread were we first discussed these:http://classiczcars.com/forums/showpost.php?p=209709&postcount=122

Signed by Mr. K and its only $275
Looking at the pictures and comparing it to my yellow 240Z, I'd buy it on the assumption that it's a parts car, and place my bid accordingly. If it turns out to be worth saving, fine. But I wouldn't bid on it that way. Does appear to have some good parts, though.

Nice new antenna switch made by Dave
And that's exactly where the alternator plug and the sidemarker conversions he sells came from. I think of things I'd like to have for my own car, make an ugly mockup, and let Dave do it right. It's a good system!

What happened to Zhome.com????
Was still on the placeholder page on the West Coast at 8:00 AM PDT this morning, but is available again as of now.

Vapor Lock??
Check to make certain all of your fuel hose clamps are tight. Both at the filter and also at the tank. If they are loose it can suck air there.

Nice new antenna switch made by Dave
Mine is a Harada HR-22. I bought mine at a similar surplus parts house a few months ago. I had to pay $33 for mine.

Any advice on Z's?
Dave, I've put 15+ in mine, when it was quite empty.

What happened to Zhome.com????
Looks like the domain registration expired.

BRE Air dam
Mine is still black gel-coat, and I agree, it would look better in satin black. But I plan to paint it to match the car when the car itself gets painted.

A bargain in Seattle?
That's new, I get it the flagged page now too. Claimed to be a clean original '73 for $2900. Probably too good to be true anyway...

Looking for info on old Nissan comp springs
What Gary said is a good point. Mine were far too stiff with NOS Mulhollands, but fine with KYBs. What strut inserts do you have?
-
A bargain in Seattle?
Yes, it's a '73, and there's a whole lot left to the imagination. But if it's even half as good as described, this is a real buy. http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/car/621047827.html

Looking for info on old Nissan comp springs
Derek, do you know which Nissan Comp springs you got? I have a set of the repro Euro Stage 1 springs on my 240Z, and the ride is almost unchanged over the stock springs I took out.
