This thread sort of blows the old rumor that all JDM cars that are retired from the streets are sunk in the ocean. Will

Where do the best parts come from?
Ed, You could have checked any or all of them-I use them all too, but the best parts don't always seem to come from new sources... Will

center cap
Keep an eye out on Ebay. or find something that will work. My Mesh enkies will take the wheel caps from wagon (six spoke) 280ZX rims with only a little modification to the cap attatchemnt. I posted a picture somewhere-I'll round it up, or take another one. Will

Rear suspension rebuild
It isn't usually corrosion that makes the pins stick. It is the deformation of the spindle pin by the special bolt that keeps it from turning. I have looked at a healthy niumber of stuck spindle pins that were successfully removed, and on all of them, there was a pronounced new wear area at either end of the recess formed into the spindle pin for the retaining bolt. Corrosion was present, but the deformation is what locked the pin in the hole. Will

Restoring fender emblem
Kenny, I am sure different parts are done different ways-if the exterior pieces were done exactly the same way as the interior pieces, they would have fallen apart long ago-chrome on top of copper is only a temporary thing, without the nickel, the porousity of the chrome lets the copper corrode almost immediately. The chrome strips on the door pannels may well be aluminum. Zrush had the vents in the hood chome plated(Plastic) in another thread Scott had said it was expensive, and done with no warranty. There is a place in Tallahassee, Fl. that does chrome plate plastic-no clue as to how expensive-I bought NOS parts, and saved the best used examples for when those are NLA... Will

Garage Design
I am getting ready to build a garage, and an addition on our house. Because of the codes in Savannah, and the positioning of my house on the lot, I have to apply for a variance. I am requesting approval for a 24x36 building, the largest I could reasonably expect to get a variance for. I am considering what materials to build the garage . Right now Cinder block is looking pretty good, strong enough to support a rail for a chain hoist, and a storage loft. I would veneer the outside with a brickwork wainscoat, and siding above that. I will put a four post parking lift in, as well as an efficiency bathroom(a watercloset with a drain in the floor and a showerhead), hotwater, and A/C. I am going to build a scale of the property to show before and after in my presentation for the variance. Will plat.bmp

Don't waste your time-unless the wheel was made in the last few years, or is current, they "don't support it" The three times I have called(to get the next guy on the phone) them, they have been absolutely rude about anything not currently in inventory. They can't be bothered with those of us who liked what they use to have more than what they have now. Will

Restoring fender emblem
Kenny, I think You are mistaken about the "chrome" on the early Z plastic emblems being aluminum. I have looked into the processes used in the early 70s. If you peel the "chrome" off there is clearly a layer of copper on top of the plastic and under the chrome. The layer of copper proves that the emblems actually were chrome plated, and not vacuum deposited aluminum-on the interior door-panel trim, it could be the aluminum, but given that in my research, the process was first patented in 1968, and refined to provide a more consistant cosmetic appearance in 1981-it does not appear that the vacuum depositing process would have been in widespread use until at least the late 70s. I doubt that any of the trim in a 240Z is actually aluminum, though some of the later Nissan replacement parts might well be. Will

Custom fuel rails....?
TomoHawk, I did pretty much what you did, but with a razor blade. Still a major PITA. The hoses were varnished onto the nipples-I actually had to shave the rubber off both the injectors and the nipples-raises my blood pressure and cholesterol just thinking about it... Will

Custom fuel rails....?
If the rail uses barbs, aren't you still using short bits of hose that will still be hard to replace? Granted the rail will have fewer problems in removal(original is formed around the engine and is fastened under fasteners holding other things)? To me, the most difficult part of working with the injectors was replacing that 2.5" section of hose between the injector and the rail-doesn't sound like that problem is addressed by that fuel rail. TomoHawk, you've been there and done that-is it better? Will

Strut Mount Insulator Question.
Unless the rubber has deteriorated and they are either spongy or crumbling(check to see if they are easily deformed by pressure) they are fine. It is better to replace them if you are in doubt. Will

Replacement board material for panels
Chipboard is what is originally used-a thinner version of OSB with more resin/glue, and paper remnants instead of 1/2 chewed wood. The board was covered in a 1/8" sheet of foam cut to fit one side and glued, then sprayed with glue, wrapped in vinyl, with staples through the back. Will

How would you paint your car if?
Here are some diaper fume induced ideas... 1)Since it is far from stock, why not take the best of the emblems and enlarge them-(make the hood ornament cover the hood(still round but large and in paint instead of chromed plastic)), the fender emblems fill up the lower fenders, the quarter vents extend to the lower fender...Keep the painted emblems in the same proportion, but much larger... You have exaggerated the performance of the Z over stock, why not the emblems? 2) Cover it with a "LANSMO" theme- it is your car after all... 3) Chrome plate the sheet metal that was originally painted, and paint the pieces that were originally chrome. 4) Paint it three colors seporated by a zipper being opened-with flesh and a navel being exposed by the zipper...or use the paint scheme that Beandip and Enrique discussed for Garys car(you will have to email one of them for a photo....you can then call it a true fair lady...heeheehee!) 5) Paint replicas of your license plate all over the car-but only if you won't speed... 6) Paint it to look like it is in a baggy plastic grocery bag. 7) Paint a mural of all of the work you have done on it on it(or at least the reciepts). 8) Paint reflections of your favorite place into it 9) Paint it to look like it is going tripple digits when it is sitting still-optical illusions 10) Paint it three colors of primer but with a shine you can eat off. Thumbs up to Victoria British
2. I also placed another large order with them last weekend after this incident. They actually took the time to mail me a thank you note for being a repeat customer and choosing to order from them... I don'tthink I've ever gotten this from a company I've orderred from. Just made my day a little bit. Just thought this was all really nice and professional and thought a few others might want to know since I know a lot of forum questions start out with "where should I go to buy...." I have had the same thing happen with them with large orders, and it was a nice gesture. My last order contained the Gmachine adjustable bushings and I forgot to order the wrenches-VB let me order them late, and shipped them free. When I went to install the bushings a month later I found one of the delrin collars was wrong-it was tapered, not flat. I called tham several times, and got no response what so ever, I know they were just reselling the kit, but a response would have been appreciated. I did some sluething, and found the manufacturer, and the owner was very friendly and happy to correct the mistake at no charge to me-he even called a week later to be sure I recieved the part. Will

Where do the best parts come from?
I have bought parts from all of the choices, I seem to get the best deal on parts from buying complete parts cars after checking them out, but other avenues certianly take the hassle out of that choice. Now that Chloe is gone, I don't have a steadfast answer. Will
