L28 full rebuild assembly
Dave, I’ve been admiring your test stand since you built it. I’d prefer to leave from your mistakes then make my own. Do you a plan to copy? The only problem is I need to buy extra stuff, like a radiator, starter. I have extra AFMs, ECUs and other bits. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So for future reference here’s what a ZX and Z oil pick-up tube look like side by side. Approximately 1.5” longer on the ZX one. Oil pan going on today. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Removing Intake Manifold Heat Shield
Hey, I had the same issue. I Couldn’t remove the line either. I am going to do an EGR delete so I just cut the metal hose. Probably not what you want to do but that was my solution. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Dave, I tend to agree with you. Now I need to find one because they appear out of stock at all the typical Z retailers. If anyone wants to sell an extra or knows where one is available for sale let me know. I’ll start digging. All stop....for now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So, I’ve installed the oil tube pickup. I took some pics to share. It looks like a tight fit but still no obstruction I can see. As you can see in the pic its darn close to the oil drain plug. I’d guess it’s about 1/4-3/8” away from the threads on the drain. What do you all think? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Cliff, thanks for the pics. That pan is the ZX pan in your pics. You can tell bey the shape of the pickup opening. Its more curved than the Z. See my pics of the two side by side above. The fit seems fine. Didn’t feel it hitting anything and didn’t require any force to get the pan to sit flush. I don’t think it will be a problem. At least I hope, I’ve spend few hours removing rust and grime on that pan and put a fresh coat of POR-15 on it . Looks like new. Also did the harmonic balancer while I had all the stuff out. I’m not following you ZH? Should it not fit? I bolted the pickup on the the oil pan fit on just fine. Don’t think it was rubbing on the pan but the pickup might be close to the oil drain plug. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I checked figment and all goes together fine. The back opening is about and inch further on the ZX. I can’t see inside to verify but I think it will be okay. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I saw that but also read that only the turbo had a different one. Read it on HybridZ. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

According to Zcardepot all of these pickups are the same but I don’t necessarily think that’s any sort of verification. https://zcardepot.com/products/oil-pump-pick-up-tube-new-240z-260z-280z-280zx Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So today was the plan was to get my oil pan cleaned up, painted and installed on the engine. Many thanks to Wayne on the forum who graciously donated an oil pan to my cause. He told me he donated oil pan from a 1977. I need a new pan because mine has some serous dents and what I thought might be a small penetration, from the yard banging it around. So when I was out cleaning these oil pans this morning I noticed that the ZX will is significantly different than the Z pan. I was wondering are there any serious compatibility issues that would forgo me being able to use this Z will pan on a 82’ F54 block if anybody knows please let me know before I sand, prime and paint this 77 pan. thank you. See pics. 77 on left 82 on right. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

What are the facts about 280z ECU compatibility and differences
This ECU topic is an interesting subject, I have three of them. I found a place in Memphis Tennessee while I was working that is an ECU repair shop I have thought about taking one of mine down there to have them look at it and see if they have the proper documentation and equipment to test. Even though it’s working properly I wonder if it’s really exactly like it should be since these things are so old. Dave I think I confirmed your findings as well because one of my ECUs was the automatic transmission 600 series and if I remember correctly my car would not run with it in there and that was one of the problems that the previous owner could not figure out. James, thanks for the info. I’ll be getting 240z style bumper for my 77’ 280z from you guys. It will be a few months so if you anticipate an end of production on the near horizon please keep the forum informed so others don’t miss the boat! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Interesting that there were so many minor changes. I discovered while researching this that ZX series cars had many more small changes than the 280Z series. I’m going to my yard with the three 280z’s and a the 240 this week. I’m going to grab a housing out of there. If anyone has a request, please let me know. These 4 cars are mostly untouched so it makes for a great place to get hard to find or expensive parts. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So after some research in the 1982 FSM (same year as my engine). The thermostat housing has an extra sensor. I’ve circled it in the photo below. This sensor is connected to the blower fan that goes over the valve cover which attempts to cool the intake to prevent the hot start problems these motors have due to exhaust manifold proximity. I think I’ might just get a 280z housing and sell this one online or just leave it disconnected because I don’t intent to use the blower. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I think this might be the accurate configuration. BTW, the large one is the thermo time switch because I won’t fit in the head location. This set-up looks to match the publications. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
