I'll simplify my suggestion: 1. The ball wants to fall vertically in Y axis due to the force of gravity. 2. The cart can only push/pull in X axis (i.e. it can not push ball upward in Y direction). This limits all forces to right the pendulum in the X axis.... so the force of the falling ball has to be translated to X axis. 3. The ball-on-a-stick is a classic torque model where the rotational force at the fulcrum can be broken into an X and a Y component proportional to the angle. (Typically θ is drawn between the arm and X axis and cos θ would be used to obtain X component of force but in this case sin θ is needed) Once the relationship with the torque's X component is expressed, the rest is just translating this to the pulley and strings then translating to voltage.

I think it is just a torque problem. The basic element is force in the +X direction from the car on the ball transmitted along the shaft has to counter the -X direction force of mg from the ball falling.... which I believe is proportionate to sin θ. When θ is negative and the ball falls in -x everything is reversed. Equation of motion is F=ma for the cart where F is equal to the X component of F=mg Sin θ from the falling ball. Seems like a Segway. btw I'm not an engineer ?

Night driving with light intensity meter on windscreen at eye level and data collection instruments on rear deck? Hmmm second thought is sound and vibration monitoring. Here is another helmeted tester on a turning circle with sensors in wheel:

Chris, I have photos of Detroit 69 but no Z yet. You can see Datsun Signs in the distance and some Toyotas.

Yes BIG THANKS KATS! Mike posted a newspaper clipping of the LA show but it is difficult to see the car details. Your photo shows the classic grey plastic console, no D hubcaps,No OK sticker, and very light shift knob.
  11. Stock L24 High Compression no emissions advance is 17 degrees at 650rpm. Here is vacuum advance map for L24 high compression engine: 5.5 degrees in by 245mm HG Here is mechanical advance map for L24 high compression engine: 6 degrees in by 1000 rpm
  12. Webers like ~ 20degrees advance at idle but this is too much to cranks at start. 10 degrees is nice for start cranking. With 10.5:1 compression max advance may be 30 to 34 degrees. You will also need 93 octane gas to help reduce ping.
  13. What is air/fuel at cruise on flat highway at 50rpm? What is air fuel ratio at idle? What is fuel level? You may be just running lean. The trick is to get the fuel levels right then find the right idle jet to give a cruise between 14 and 16 (depending on fuel efficiency you want). Then you set the idle (13 to 15 depending on how stinky you want it.... idle is smoother at 13 but it is rich). Repeat the cruise test as the idle adjustment can make ~ 0.5 a/f difference at cruise. Typical fuel level range is 27mm down to 29mm down. What size chokes/Venturis do you have? 32-33mm are nice for 2.8l 40DCOE on the street.

Many thanks Chris! I'm grateful for the info. I agree with you, it would make sense that it was the same green and tan car as at Boston that you dug up due to the proximity in time and location. It seems there were many photos and videos of the silver and red show cars but the green one not so many.

Thanks Chris. Do you know the colour of the Pierre Hotel Car or have any photos? Your Boston show car is great! btw There were a few pictures of a silver badged, white walled 240z in Beverly Hills in 1969 and Mike has a picture of the Oct 31, 1969 LA show car that looks silver or white... very close in time and location so it seems to be HLS30-00008. I spoke to Johnnie Gable and she confirmed these photos were from Beverly Hills area.
  17. I'm helping a friend with a resto. He has the Cosmo single coil version. I'll keep you posted once we get it on the road.

I was thinking that maybe the brakes are on to cause the red areas to seem brighter than the clear area in the photo. This would fit North American with 3 bulbs lit. Here is the credit. "Nissan Motor CO JAPAN, YOKOHAMA: Nissan Motor Co., Yokohama plant. Engine testing section of the Engine department where the Emission Control Program is being worked out (anti air pollution control)Exhaust analyzing at the testing laboratory. Here a small sample tube is introduced into the exhaust pipe inside the larger exhaust drainage pipe. Car is Datsun Sports 2000 Z, Yokohama, Japan in 1970."

The photo credit said 2000. The driver is on the left but the tail lights seem to have odd reverse darkness compared to the the rest of the light?

Hoovered this while trying to find Pierre Hotel Photos... Enjoy! Note the driver's seat and gear shift.... very interactive dyno!! 2 litre being tested for emissions in 1970

Whilst you seem to take great delight in the lack of public domain photos from the Oct 1969 event at the Pierre Hotel, surely you must take even greater delight in the problems Nissan had pulling off their first show in the UK.... a year later! England would not even let the cars in the country.... a LHD 240z landed in Europe had to be sent in ......late for the show too!!!!

Thanks! The only photos I have seen at that time are ones of the non-badge HLS30-00004 or 5 in the dirt (lower photo below). It also appeared in many papers in Oct/Nov 1969. I also have a Nissan re-issue of the Oct 22, 1969 press release with a glossy photo. It looks like this one but in B&W:

It was probably HLS30-00008. No matter how much some wish there was no car....there was a Z at the Pierre Hotel according to the NY Times (thanks to @Carl Beck? N.Y.Times 23, Oct. 69 - Datsun Enters the Middle-Priced Sports Car Market "Nissan Motor Company Ltd., which has built it reputation on economy cars, is making a determined bid for the middle-priced sports car market. The company showed its Datsun 240Z sports car at it international preview yesterday at the Pierre Hotel. The car is expected to be competitive with Detroit-built sports-type of cars and European sports cars.".....
