  1. Measure the outer diameter of the threaded region, that is the diameter. This is easy if you have a vernier caliper, however you could still do it accurately other ways with some ingenuity and a basic ruler with mm markings. The thread pitch is determined by the distance between the threads, so just measure from peak to peak along the axis of the rod. This will most likely not be an integer and be something like 1.25 or 1.5mm. It will be easier to measure if you just measure the distance between 10 threads, then divide by that number. In metric you will have a value like 8.00x1.25 or 10.00x1.25 or something to that effect that you can use to find the right knob. FYI, the original shifter in my '72 has an 8.00x1.25 thread with the original knob.

I have to say, that gold concept car photo looks pretty awful. The front end reminds me of a Honda del sol. I think most people are replying here with a lot of "oh my god, they should have made it just like MY 240z/280z but with modern stuff added to it." I personally would not want this. Retro car production is a huge cop out in my opinion. This is something a car company falls back onto if they cannot make appealing new designs, therefore they need to fall back on appealing to people's nostalgia. This type of appeal is ephemeral at best. Did anyone even care when the 'new' Ford Thunderbird got sacked? From all my perceptions, the general public thought it was pretty neat when it came out. (See : Ford Motor Company, 2005 Mustang bastardization, recent Thunderbird incarnation) Lets face it, Nissan has sold a heck of a lot of 350zs despite this being a time when sports car sales in general are not that hot. They obviously did something right. I'm not a huge fan, but I think the popularity of the car with the general public (i.e. the people who matter most to the financial survival of a large volume car manufacturer) seems to speak for itself. I certainly wouldn't want to drive around and see 50 other people driving a car that looked just like mine before my engine even had time to warm up. I, for one, am thankful Nissan did not gank the physical appearance of the original Z. If I were a classic Mustang owner, I think I would throw up a little into my mouth every time I saw some retard talking on their cell phone driving that 2005 abomination of a mustang around. my 2c
  3. Maybe you could get a thin metal pipe of the proper diameter with a bend in it (or make a bend) that you could slide the hose over to make the curves you need and making sure it wont crimp at that spot.

Luckily I have the option of public transit now and can ride free with my university ID. Austin has a bus system whereas in Arlington they had none. FYI, Arlington, TX is the largest city in the united states with no mass transit system. Every time it comes up in city council it gets lobbied against heavily by General Motors, who operate an automobile manufacturing plant in Arlington. Pretty crooked if you ask me. I was burning through about 20 gallons every week or two from needing to drive everyplace. Luckily I only go through about 13 gallons every month or two now.
  6. maybe they are just messing with us

FWIW, I didn't stain my rim and I think it came out in a very dark cherry color to begin with after I cleaned it up and glossed it.

I have a similar problem as well, if I am gentle with my steering wheel it is not an issue. The spokes on mine were fairly solid, so I only painted the rim with a clear glossy paint after cleaning it up. I put several coats on it, and it holds up well unless I accidentally ding the rim with the seatbelt. This results in a pretty big chip in the gloss usually. I imagine i'll have to redo it with a tougher substance that other people have mentioned on these forums eventually.
  9. Awesome. A Z just wouldn't be the same to me with an automatic

So do you even wear a seat belt tomohawk? Or do you not want to be 'stuck' in the car after an accident?

  13. As long as we are nitpicking now, one million hours is going to be about 114 years. Is it 2084 already? By golly!
  14. I am speechless.

Could you post some pictures? I seem to recall reading somewhere that the front caps can be put on if you install the center caps before mounting the wheel.

it's pretty straightforward. Get new mounting bolts, however. You will save yourself a lot of grief.

I installed one of the fiberglass shrouds from MSA last fall. I had to drill the mounting holes in it, but other than that, no complaints. If I remember correctly, I didn't even need to remove anything except the fan to install it. It took some monkeying around to get it oriented so it would go in past the upper 'roof' plate that sticks out from the upper tank. Did it make a difference? It is hard to say, but probably not when taking into account the placebo effect that was sure to result after shelling out money for it. Driving conditions and all that are never consistent enough in my use to really determine if there is a huge difference. I still notice the temperature needle climb when I get stuck in traffic on a warm day, but that is the result of some other factors and were not really improved by the shroud.

I'm just somewhat puzzled as to why that would be displayed as if it were a point of pride.
  22. I'm looking forward to this, I don't think my digital cable has touched any channels above 60 since last season ended.

Yeah, I am considering getting an alarm installed. If anyone has any advice on that, I would be glad to hear that as well. It would probably be money better spent than buying a new cover to be stolen yet again.

Last Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning someone stole a custom fit beige technalon cover off my 240z from underneath my building near downtown Austin. The purpose of this thread is 2-fold : 1) If anyone in the Austin area tries to sell you one or something of that nature(I am aware, the chances are extremely remote), please let me know. I have seen several other S30 Z owners around the area, and as much as I hate to think one of them took it, it is definitely not outside the realm of possibility. However, In all likelihood it was stolen by a homeless person to try to use for warmth, except it was secured with a steel cable and padlock. Whoever took it either made plans to take it and brought appropriate tools, or just used a knife to cut the fabric around a securing point. The other possibility is that it was stolen by some random idiot who thought he could use it on his car that was not a Z. I'm guessing it likely wont fit anyway because of the shape and small size of the cover compared to modern cars. 2) Anyone have any good ideas for theft deterrent of these covers? My car is under the building in such a way that it really does not get rained on except during heavy winds from the south. The main problem is dust and dirt settling on it. The cable and padlock were in retrospect something of a joke. It certainly wouldn't stop anyone who wanted to take the cover. I guess I had let myself slip into some naive notion that maybe something like a car cover was safe from the sticky fingers of the local trash. I filed a police report and all that over the phone, but of course I am not expecting anything at all to come of it and have pretty much written that cover off as gone for good. I have an old polycotton cover up in Dallas that I may get dry cleaned next time I am visiting up there to at least keep the dust off. I know my insurance would be no good for this problem, since I have a $500 deductible. Being a cash strapped college student, I don't have another $170 to blow on a replacement that would probably get stolen again anyway. It is a shame. It was a really good cover and I only had it for about a month before someone nicked it. Feedback welcomed.
