Why is diff 1/2 inch too long
All went well for the weekend and I even set a peronal best for the track. Howver, I blew my gearbox up on the way home. It s ok as I have only lost 5th and reverse - don;t need them that often anyway. Strange thing is that after the drama of taking 6 days to get a diff in, nothing looks hard anymore, even a blown gearbox. I'm smiling!!!:classic: :classic:

Why is diff 1/2 inch too long
Thanks for your help Panchovisa Turns out that it was a combination of a new diff using an older front mounting. It has been explained that they changed the diff angle after a couple of years by offsetting the single mounting bolt by around 30mm. Extremely frustrating but got the diff back in and am quite happy with it.:classic: Biker

Why is diff 1/2 inch too long
I have just installed a new R180 diff into my 240Z. The problem being is that it seems too long to fit. If I bolt the front cross member on, I can't get the propeller shaft on. I disconnect the front cross member, I can get the prop shaft on but the holes won't meet on the cross member and the chassis. It looks the same as the old one with the exception of the front flange pinion, old one is square, new one is round. Still same length though (42mm). It bloody 42 degrees here in Oz (that's 110 F in the shade) and I have been under this bloody car all day in the western sun. I am totally PXXXXd off!!! Even had the missus under the car with me (helping, nothing else - too hot)) Any suggestions??????? biker:disappoin :disappoin

E88 on L28
This is info that I have come accross on the difference between the two versions. The E88 came on the 1971-73 240s and '74 260s, in 2 versions, small valve and large valve on the 260. It's chambers are the same cc size as later N42 and 47 heads. Regards biker

R180 Flange Bolt torque
Do you think that I may be able to get restitution from Haynes for stripping the bolts (but hopefully not the centre of the diff - yet to check). PS Nissan do not carry the bolts in Australia. said they may have them in Japan but it loks like the part number has been deleted. Biker

R180 Flange Bolt torque
Can anyone tell me what the torque foot llbs is on the single flange bolt on each side of an R180 diff. The manual says 40footllbs (5.5kgm) but I have just stripped one of the bolts and the other one whilst torqued to 40llbs did not feel right. I have read on the site that it is only 18llbs which may sound and feel right. (2manyZ's - you may have answered this for me but the reply dissapeared off the sitre before i could read it) Thanks biker

Tyre-Tire Survey
Surfing the Net looking for some replacement tyres for the 4WD (no not the Zed) and found this site. It looks like it has a great deal of input from their surveys a a large number of brands and types. A few of you have asked the question on how good is a certain tyre, including me. Here it is if you want to have a gander Biker www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults

cant get timing right--please help
2manyZ I have installed it 180 degrees out and have watched a mechanic do the same. The difference is that the bolts are much tighter when bolting the dizzy in as the tang whilst offset will engage. I thought it wouldn't go weither but it does Biker:ermm:

cant get timing right--please help
You need to go through a process of elimination. What did you do before doing the timing. Have you removed the dizzy as can install it 180 degrees out. Check that both inlet and exhaust are free on cylinder one when you have TDC mark. The rotor button should be pointing at around 7 o'clock which is where No1 HT lead is. Are the points making contact with the dizzy shaft? Biker

Heater fan and wipers not working..
Sounds like you may have a bypass problem But back to your original one. Was having same problem with heater, wipers and radio not working occassionally. Quite baffling because sometimes they would just come on. Finally worked it out that it was the ignition key not returning totally from when starting. Just catching a fraction. System is apparently designed to shut down all circuits while you are actually tunring the starter motor over. Check it out:D biker

One for the Aussies
I will beat you to it 1 Bravo as i have read the history of Anzac several times (currently reading about Gallipoli again) The ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corp) commenced in 1914 whereby the Aussies promised to send 20,000 troops to WW1 at the beginning in August 1914. The Kiwis could only put together 4000 quickly so to make up 2 divisions, the second was formed up as 2/3rds aussie and a 3rd kiwi. They were known as the A&NZ division. There was a great deal of angst that the poms would place the A&NZ troops into pommy divisions fighting seperately. This prevented this from happening. Both divisions were sent to Gallipoli which is a little peninsula in at the bottom of Turkey. During the month of August 1915 at this place, there was a major attack at a place called Lone Pine and the Jolly. Whilst they had fought well together from April up until August, it cemented a relationship which we all enjoy. The A&NZ spen all the time together during WW1. We may say bad things about them but they are things you would only say to a mate. If he wasn't your mate he would thump you. PS - did you know that the first major action seen by the Americans in WWI was fighting alongside the Aussie battalions in the battle of Hamel as they wanted to learn about the style of fighting required in France. Before the attack, General Pershing ordered the US soldiers not to get involved as he did not want them under the command of foreign commanders. A number disobeyed choosing to participate which turned out to be a highly successful battle. biker

We Are Australian!
Zedrally Too much time on your hands philosiphising. It does sum up our attitude and rivalry that we share in this country. We all have a good sense of humuor when bucketing on the other states but we won;t go to war over it. Not worth the trouble, what the hell would you do with Victoria anyway. Like to also point out that if our way of life was threatened and we get boxed into a corner, then we will rip ya bloody arms orff!!!! :classic:

Stone the crows is basically a verbal exclamation mark like Hillbilly says " I just dropped a SOHC 4 cylinder in my Zed to make it lighter" Ozzie replies "Stone the flippin' crows mate, are ya bloody mad!!"

kings springs--anyone used them?
Datfreak Someone else might have to chip in the compresion of the standard. I don't have my manual with me but I would hazard a guess of around 150lbss. The 180-190lbss gives a firm ride which increase handling with much less bounce throught the corners at speed. I can testify after converting over to Kings that my lap times and heart rate dropped significantly.:classic: biker

Travel to Australia
Sudz Guys are right about Woollongong (pronounced wool-on-gong). It is about 50 miles south of Sydney. Best way to get there is by train or driving. right on the east coast if you are into beaches. A drive down the coast to the sleepy little fishing villages is good. Say from the "the gong" to Eden on the Victorian border. If you are using it as a base then you could branch out to the capital Canberra" about 2 hours driving time. Nice way to get there is through Kangaroo Valley. From there you can get onto the Snowys (about another 1-1/2 hours south of Canberra) and travel a bit around there. 2 choices from there is either heading down into Victoria (about 2 hours from the heart of the Snowys to the border) or alternatively head into outback New South Wales. Personally, I have travelled around these pats on a bike a fair bit and I would head for Victoria. Just realised everything is about 2 hours:ermm: Best way to do it IMO is via car. Hertz Rentals can do it or you could look at hiring a campervan from a company called Britz This is the website http://www.bluedtravel.com/bdte/prodAU01.htm If you want to get to the Barrier Reef, then it is a 2 hour ( ) flight from Sydney and your best step off point would be either the Whitsundays (Hamilton Island) or Cairns. Weather should be good around April as it is mid Autumn here. A lot will depend on the length of time you have and how many readies (money) you have got. Start practising your Gidday's, Crikeys and "Stone the crows" slang. Biker:classic:

kings springs--anyone used them?
I changed over to kings about 12 months ago and the car goes great through the corners. Dropped around 35-40mm so the car sits pretty low. I currently bottom out on rough roads when I have some weight in the car so going lower than this would be a bit of a pain. It is probably worth asking them before you buy them what is the compression tension. I believe that they run at a round 180lbss so if you want to use it at the track and not worry about harsh ride, it might be worth asking them to make a higher tensioned spring say around 220lbss (You learn by your mistakes:ermm: ) I think the costs aren't that much greater. biker
