Yep, thats the one! Snake Oil that actually worked [for a few years]!

Strange you haven't lost all water if the heads cracked? All indicators are pointing to it unfortunately. There is a possible solution, however, there is a propriety head repair can of hope available. The name escapes me at present [i have no doubt someone on this board will remember the name], but in retrospect your problem was my problem a couple of years ago. My 240 occaisionally dropped all it's water, usually [always] leaving a big white cloud in it's wake, [very odd as when filled it could run for days or weeks without any indication of trouble, probably indicating a hair line crack] in desperation I tried the can of hope and you could have knocked me over with a feather as it worked for 2 years until another fateful day and it gave a slight lurch coupled with strange engine events [can't remember exactly what but it was weird] signalled the end of the can of hope. Inspection of the head showed that it was a basket case and it was a cheaper option to re-build a good used head. If you do use the can of hope, make sure you follow the instructions, as it DOES NOT work with any coolent in the system. Good luck.

Valves broken in cylinder sounds more like a tat tat tat until no more tat! Trust me you'll know immediately this has happened, the sound once heard is unmistakable. As you've been able to re-start the engine and I gather you're not hearing a tat tat tat then I would doubt a broken valve and I would doubt the gasket theory. Pull the plugs and let us know what condition the're in. Perhaps it's all in the timing ,have you recently checked it?

Blue smoke? Not wanting to be a wet blanket, but it doesn't sound like a head gasket. White smoke is associated with a blown head or gasket. The bang worries me also? Was it more like a backfire? Have you pulled the plugs? THis will give a better indication of the condition of the head/gasket.

Mike, I write this as we both head for cover. MOMLOL Sometimes I think that it would be more appropriately named the L series engine and subsequent derivites"club". But who really cares, this is one friendly, harmonious group of like minded fanatics with very similar thoughts, be it a zed or any derivitive of the L series. Life's to short to be arguing over trivialities! MOM

Alan, the Aussie market had no other choice, zeds came as a 5 speed only with the only option being the Sports boxes. So it might be confusing to say that all other markets got the choice as there was no choice! MOM
  7. LRP for me, OPtimax when I want to fang about!
  8. Steve, Keep the list of write-offs. You can never have "too much" data on RHD zeds, whether they're drivable or not. How many do you have on the registar up to date?

    Bikini Site? Where?????

I came across multi colour LEDS the other day. It should be possible to provide a switching array so you can alter colours from white to red, blue etc? Has anyone progressed any further on this topic?
  11. Fuel pump is located adjacent to the fuel tank. If you have a look underneath near the rear wheels you should see mounts and a couple of leads. Of course you may have an earlier model car which didn't come with electric pump. IMHO the manual pump is sufficient for most uses.

Hi Alan, Thanks for the info. Just wondering if you might have any photo's dimensions, etc that would allow me to fabricate a copy. Cheers MOM

Oh you stirrer! If Alan T, Carl B and others read this and take it seriously, then they will be heading for ICU in due course!
  14. Have no idea what the little black box is? Anyone else? Since it's been modified, I guess you're on your own! Good luck.
  15. Rule # 1. Never, Never ever throw anything zed related away. Whether it's from 2+2 or a 2 seater, many parts interchange[ amny don't also]. Who knows, one day you may come across a clean 2+2 for nothing [wishful thinking] that's worth putting on the road. It's at that time you'll regret ever throwing out those parts. Stash them under the house, wherever you can find space. Then as time allows compare parts that you're needing. Good luck!
  16. Sounds electrical, I would have suggested the capacitor, but you have an electronic dizzy. Highly doubt it would be the leads, how long is the spark, check if it is weak. That will give you a better indication of where to start looking next.
  17. I've kept silient is this thread up to now, interesting to hear [read] the arguments for and against, however all facts point to increasing values, purely, as I believe the zed is grossly undervalued Mick [i know youré not questioning the price], that $15k car is an excellent buy for anyone who wants a ready to run rally car and has an impressive VRC competition history. For anyone to knock the price is madness as to re-create it would burn a hole in your pocket of at least twice the asking price! I'm hoping that it still may be around next year when I'm more financial and it can join the stable. People, we need to talk up the price, not down!

Gav, There is a thread on 3x SU's, even though it sounds like a good idea, the results appear inconclusive. This appears surprising as I had thought increasing the volumetric capacity would have corresponding increase in get up and go!

Me thinks the name of the photo should apply to the cam! Head may be OK

I don't think to many people are aware of these rules, even plod. It was highlighted in a recent RACV article [thats an Service Auto club for those O/s] Several points were raised on about tyres and roadworthy vehicles. This was one, one other was spare tyres. It appears that if a car is presented for a roadworthy without a spare, then the car is considered roadworthy from a tyre point. Now get this, if a vehicle is presented with a spare that has no legal tread or is carrying one of those newer space saving spares, then the vehicle is deemed as being un-roadworthy. These technical points are relativly unknown by all but the nit pickers! I believe that the Government is looking into the space saving spares as they are becoming more prevelant these days and technicaly render the vehicle un-roadworthy.

You got me on that one, I'm running 225 on the rear, 215 on the front [white 260], same width rims and I know if a "plod" who knows the RT Rules wanted to give me a canary then I would need to change them so they all all the same. It's raining here today, with 225 on the rear you need to be so careful in accelerating out of corners! The rally car is 195 all around and handles great in all conditions, so when the time comes it will be back to 195's on the 260.

Alfa, In Victoria it is illegal [unroadworthy] to have different sizes front ot back [even though many including myself do it, but be prepared to have it roadworthied with stock rims!]. If I was going down this road again I would go for 15" rims and no wider than 215.
  23. & mine plus the others for future. HS 30 - 103305 L24 083870 8/1973 GRS 30 -016122 L26 168542 1977 GRS 30-10833 L26??????? 1973
  24. Well, I didn't want to mention it, but since you sold the zed.........

If there you're moulds, then it looks like it's their problem. Mis-appropriation is a serious offence. Sounds like you may need legal advice. To my knowledge there are 3 "zed shops" in Melbourne. Z Spares Zed Xtras Capri Components I can look up the #'s later in the day if you like.
