  1. Would it be possibleto direct the effluent through the firewall instead of the side?

The air 'tunnel' is where the fender meets the top of the inner fender (at least on my '78.) It has a rectangular cross-section and you can see it if you take out the inner fender/splash guard. On my '78, they don't have the elbow because air is 'scooped' from below by the lower-front edge of the splash guard (it hangs down a little to 'scoop' air.) I was considering closing this up to keep water from splashing behind the headlamps and adding the plastic elbows.
  3. If you really wanted to go overboard with this idea, find a place that can do laser engraving and give them the graphics they need and some blanks to do the logo and have them do up about 1000 or so units.
  4. If you really want to look into expensive upgrades, try the Hawk performance or racing pads for your calipers. The performance pads are about $100 and the racing pads are DOUBLE. On top of that, most people are also upgrading the brake master cylinder, which adds another $50 or so. I agree with what Leon said that some people say it's "better" but some empirical results would help, say, braking distances from 60 MPH. Can you really say you have "Better braking" unless you've actually mashed the brakes hard on a few times on the highway or even on city streets? Real testing or comparison isn't done on a casual tour of a scenic road while listening to the radio. Plus, your tires, and the road itself, also affect the way your braking results.
  5. When I bought mine (new, from Federated Auto Parts) they were for a 1979 Toyota Pickup 4x4. They went on without a problem, besides adjusting the backplate. The stock rotor was used, and so far I haven't noticed if I should upgrade the master cylinder.
  6. IMO, the biggest problem you would have is those cheap hoses. They dry out and crack easily, and you get a vacuum leak. I had an a/c guy "replace" the leaking tube (to the fresh air door) but all he did was cut off the cracked bit from the end and put it on and say the tube was 'fixed.' It started leaking a while later, and now it's driving me nuts when I need some heat or windscreen defrosting. What would be the proper tubing to re-do the vacuum lines? Some thick-walled silicone stuff maybe? What about the roller thing that engages the detents on the selector when you move it? Mine was missing since I got the car. Is it actually a roller or a ball or what? I assume it's spring-loaded? thxZ
  7. I think that while the engine is out, I'll grab the speedometer and get the face off and see if I can brighten the odometer wheels. The wheels are kinda dirty and it's hard to read the numbers even during the daytime. The speedometer ring number could probably use a little brightening too. Has anyone tried this? I'm wondering if there are any kinds of cleaners that would help, or if there are any cleaners or solvents I should avoid using. I promise to leave the odometer wheels at the current values! :tapemouth it's already at 23,000 anyway :pirate:

When mine was stuck, I just took the screws out of the bottom hinge.

I've mentioned to a few S30 (240Z) owners I've seen that those things were "supposed to have been removed on delivery," and I was 'informed' that they were indeed normal parts for the car, along with the missing lower grille! Did you know 240Zs didn't have a lower grille? Nor the 280Z? IIRC, there was a lot of 'rope towing' done back then, so IMO, they left the hooks/eyes on probably because people were complaining about not having the convenience of a tow hook, and had to buy one (back) from the dealer after it was removed. So instead they started leaving them on, and people thought it was normal since lots of other cars & trucks had them. My dad's '68 pickup had them (we towed out of the construction area mud occasionally.)

As of Jan 1st, 2012, what is the latest permissible helmet allowed for SCCA autocross? You're allowed to go back 2 'generations' so I think it's 2000? Does anyone know when Snell will come out with the next set of helmet standards? It seems about every 5 years...

Welcome to the website. Remember to spend a LOT of time just browsing around and reading things, because most of your questions will get answered that way. If you can, print the stuff that interests you (I use a notes database called "JotNotes") and get yourself a copy of the FSM (Factory Service Manual), the correct wiring diagram, and Wick Humble's book on 240Z, as you'll need to refer to them often or eventually. We like to see good grammar, spelling and punctuation, which you seem to be capable of, so that's good. Don't be afraid to collect photos of things. You get ample storage for photos & files here.
  13. When I got my 280Z, the old-man neighbor (an "expert"on all things cars) knocked on the fender and immediately told me "You have at LEAST 1/2 inch of Bondo on here!" Wrong. There was a good layer of undercoating on the underside of the metal, but there was no Bondo. FYI, in case there is undercoating and it makes you think the metal is thicker.

Yes, there are smog laws, but no smog ether. Ohio has beautifully clean air, unless you live downwind to a cow-barn or pig-barn.

I noticed on the TV show they said it was all happening at 3 am or so. By doing it to early in the morning, you have less people and traffic, but the street is still dangerous, compared to a real drag strip. I doubt you could make it safe, with all the people and lamp posts, the curb, cars going wild, etc.

My EFI is working just fine. The engine isn't so happy when I try to start it in 30-degree air tho.

I thought the 78 Speedo has a thing on the back that affects the emmissions? I think it connects to the BCDD?

I saw that show too. In the one race, he gave a Monte Carlo a 10-car lead, and won? Did you notice the cops said they were following a group of 200 (!) street racers? How do they manage to stay 'under the radar?' That show actually gives some credence to what you see on those F&F movies. They actually do the street racing stuff! (But without the flames coming out of the exhaust pipes.

Scion FR-S\Subaru BRZ. it's the truest 240 successor in a long time.I don't think so. both just as "fat" as the 350Z.

That's odd. Nissan did the GT Academy a bout a year ago, and the winner got a job driving for the Nissan GT race team! I supposed they couldn't predict their own future.I too sometimes think of what a 2012 "skinny" Z would look like, with all the emissions and safety requirements you have to heap on it. Do you think a car without a/c, turbocharging, "premium audio," power windows & seats, or subwoofers would sell?
  22. There is a video recorder application you can get that will record until just after it detects a high-G shock, assuming it was a collision of some kind. Otherwise, that's one way to eliminate one iPhone from circulation.
  23. From what I see on the streets, it seems that an iPhone is the answer to most things lately.
  24. You don't have a speedometer application on your iPhone??
  25. The problem of waterproofing remains.
