  1. Dave and EScanlon, Many thanks. Dave, seeing that makes much more sense now. I really appreaciate the advice. Randy
  2. Yes, that is the piece. Does it need to go back on?? I didn't know if the newer weather stripping needed this before going on. If it does need it, is it still available. Thanks for the reply. Randy
  3. Folks, I was going to start putting the weather stripping back on the doors today (I just got my car back from paint several weeks ago) and just noticed that there is a one piece "something" that goes all around the door frame. It's not Rubber, but it came right off. I'm assuming that the body shop pulled all the rubber weather stripping, but this piece was left on. I pulled it off..both sides, and cleaned all around the edging. My question is what is this piece?...Is it still available? Mine are in decent shape so should I just reuse them. Also any tips on applying the rubber would be appreaciated. If I have not explained this well enough let me know and I'll try and post a photo of the piece in question. Thanks, Randy
  4. I do like the Black......but I think I'm going with White, it just stands out better than the black. But hey thats why they make both colors, everyone has different taste. However if someone has a full side shot photo of an Orange with black please post it, dk240z are your doors on yet? Thanks for all the feedback.
  5. Hey guys, Thanks for all the replies. The two sets I have came from Motorsports, so I knew they wern't original, I haven't even really looked for the original as I just assumed they were no longer in production. Jerry, thanks for all the pictures do you have access to any additional sets? Also, Mike thanks for the heads up on the centering, I'll be sure and tell the installer. As you can see I just put them on quick to get a general idea of the look, but didn't think about the datsun emblem in the center of the wide strip.... Arne...you think Black would look better on Orange? I never really considered black..Hmmm where's my electrical tape. I may have to see what it looks like now. Also, something that really drives me crazy is I was getting gas the other day and a fella walks over to the car and ask's..."did you paint that car Orange because of the Tennessee Vols". Living in the "Big Orange Country" people just assume you painted your car for the team......Argggg.....
  6. I "Temporarily" put on the White side stripes on my Orange 240. I say "temporarily" because I had two sets and these pictures are of the car after I applied them. The pictures don't show it but there are a few wrinkles and bubbles, and I want it done it right. I just put these on to shoot a few photos and see if I like the look, or keep it plain.....I really like it. So, in about a week a local sign shop said they would do the application for me, and it will be done right. Soooo, what do you guys think....stripes or plain...(I'm going with the stripes and maybe pana's later) Randy
  7. Thanks guys, Hopefully I will get the side stripes on soon
  8. Car looks great....except for that "old" radio. I would pull it out and send it to me...... Take care.
  9. Thanks fellas, Well, call me cheap but the engine did not come out and bay area painted. It would have been another 2k for that. Since I stayed the original color everything still matches, though not as shiny as the outside. Also, I just noticed that you could zoom on the pictures, I thought the photos looked a little fuzzy, then when I clicked the photo it cleared right up....I love finding things out.
  10. Hey guys, As some of you remember I dropped my car off in early Jan. to get all the rust repaired...(it wasnt much) and have the car painted. I picked it up Yesterday and finally got a chance to shoot some photos. A few things pop out that I am just noticing, like the shop broke my choke handle (imagine that), but they slipped it back on broken, so I'm just finding it. They also filled in the drivers side door mirror..Arrrr, so that needs to be fixed. (see my thread in HELP). But all in all I am very happy with the car. For those that are interested my final bill was $3862.90 For this sum of money they painted the entire car, fixed all rust by cutting out and replacing with metal ( I should note that it was very minimal, and once the panels were pulled there was not much cancer to deal with either) They replaced the front windshield, and pulled and replaced all glass. I took off the bumpers, emblems, etc. They quoted me six weeks and it took 9...so not too bad. Anyway, now I have a rust free 1973 240z in it's original Orange paint. Regards, Randy
  11. Hey folks, Just got my car back from paint and body...looks great, will be throwing up some photos in the open discussion very soon. However, the shop completley filled in the pre-cut holes where the side mirror goes. How will I know where the exact location is to drill new holes? What is the best procees for doing this...ie, I don't want to chip the paint. If anyone has any thoughts please let me know. Thanks, Randy
  12. I looked at a sweet BRG MGB.....But, the force led me to the TR6 I mean come on, what a great, reliable, never have to work on, no leaking car the Triumphs are.....:stupid: Seriously though, the lines on the TR6 are B E A utiful, and this one was restored 6 years ago, so it's basically perfect......except for the leaks, it loves to mark it's spot on the floor. Cheers...as they say
  13. Thanks guys, And Carl, Sebring is in my "to do" list....but not this year. We will be near Tampa and St. Pete the 3rd week of March, hope the weathers good. Xray, when your cars done throw up some pics, I'd love to see it. Ramses, put a little oil and lotion on and you can fit right in.. You are right it's a small cage, my wife calls it the go-cart. Hope to have pictures up soon of the Z. Randy
  14. Well, I went by the body shop today to check on my Z and everything was done except putting the glass back in...The car looked great, can't wait to get it back home. The shop said the glass guys should be there on Thursday, and then ready for pickup Friday..well see. I dropped it off on Jan 4th, so the time frame has worked out well, I am very impressed with the shop. The original Orange looks great, It's wonderful seeing the car as it must have looked in 1973. On a side note, while the 240 was away I got him a garage mate, a British cousin if you will, a beautiful 1971 Triumph TR6.....hey it's almost spring, I had to have a vert. Here's a pic of the TR6, and as soon as I get the 240 home I'll post several pictures of the paint job. Take care all, Randy

Hey folks, I finally talked my neighboor into buying his first 240z. He just called me to come check on a strong gas smell in his garage and as I entered you could smell gas, almost like someone poured some on the garage floor. After we inspected the car the smell is coming from the engine compartment somewhere, we both are by no means mechanics and I suggested he take the car in on Monday. But I did notice some small drops on the floor, and was thinking could this be something as simple as a fuel line, etc. Where could two "Novice" mechanics start troubleshooting this smell? Is there a recommended guide to follow? Any help would be appreaciated. His car is 73 model. Thanks, Randy
  16. Hello Avery, I'm not sure why Hagerty would tell you this, they do allow weekend driving and "fun" trips unless you registered your car as an antique. You must have another daily driver available, and have a locked garage, otherwise you should not be limited to just car shows and parades. Look at the 5th bullet point on this link: http://www.hagerty.com/Auto/vehicle_features.aspx Yes, there are some restrictions, but 1-2 thousand miles a year should be fine. I would call them back. RM
  17. Thanks for the advice. I think I'll let the pro's handle this one, although the stripes are only $20, I don't want to go through the hassel of a re-order. Also, Escanlon brought up a good point in a PM that I may want to wait a bit after a fresh paint job. PS...bob, your stripes look great with that BRG, hope mine turns out as well.
  18. Thanks for heads up guys, I appreaciate it.
  19. Although I'm 3-4 weeks away from getting my car back from the painter, once I have it I was going to apply the white 240z side stripes that run along both sides of the car. I already have them and was wondering if anyone has ever applied them to their car. What is the best proceedure to make sure they go on straight? Any tips or tricks would be appreaciated. Thanks in advance, Randy
  20. I vote NO.....Here's mine with, however I'm at the paint and body shop and they WILL NOT be put back on.....just my .02
  21. Thanks fella's, I think I'll visit Krispy Kreame tomorrow....
  22. Get yourself a 240.....you will love it, I'm pretty sure the 240 is quicker, it's also lighter, but the experts on this site can let you know for sure. Good luck in your search. RM FYI: Max horsepower 240z....@rpm: 151 @5600 280z....@rpm: 149 @5600
  23. I appreaciate everyone's input from my earlier post, it was interesting hearing everyones stories and thoughts, especially from the shop owners. Well, I went by the shop today for a "pop in" and the first thing the staff said was "where have you been, we thought you would be coming by everyday" and then they chuckled about how all their "classic customers" are always visiting their cars. I was shocked, it wasn't the greeting I was expecting, I thought they would just try and brush me away. Then I was taken back to the shop area where I found my precious Z, they had finished the repair work, and were into the sanding process. They told me they hope to start shooting paint in two weeks. It was a wonderful feeling to see all the progress that had taken place in just only two weeks. I guess all my dismay about the car not being moved for the first 2 weeks was.......(humbly) uncalled for impatients. The folks at the shop also said to drop by anytime to see the car, next time I'll take the camera. Sooooo, hopefully in 2-4 weeks my Orange friend will be back home.
  24. Looking through an old plastic storage box I found a bunch of papers from 1981, including this consumer guide for Datsun Z cars. I thought you guys might enjoy some of the color photos, and the "future" look at the 1984 300ZX. There was also a great article on the full story behind the 240Z. This guide is dated July, 1981. Cheers, Randy
