If you are a Datsun 240Z enthusiast, you are going to love this....

I am the Estate Administrator for my cousin's estate in Modoc County CA (Look it up on a map. RURAL). He inherited his Mother's (my Aunt's) 1972 Datsun 240Z purchased new in 07/24/1972 from Pierotti Motors, Inc. Yes, I have the original Purchase Agreement. She was the nursing supervisor for a hospital in Freemont, CA and retired to Modoc County in approx. 1990. Title is still in my Aunt's name and never transferred; I have the original Certificate of Title (pink) and even the original license plates since purchase. The car has been in barn storage for at least 10 and possibly up to 30 years. I'd love to restore it but I am not in CA so this is not possible. This is an opportunity for a 240Z enthusiast to obtain and restore a one-owner car and, yes, she was about 5' 3" and petite so it was literally driven by a "little old lady".

The car:

Odometer reads 11999.

White exterior. It may have ben yellow originally (see engine compartment strut tower and interior back). No visible dents or scratches or rust. Chrome looks clean. Original wheels and covers. Original wood steering wheel. Black seats and interior needs restoration. Appear leather but might not be. AM/FM radio and air conditioning are listed on the original contract. The 1972 contract is pretty basic so I'm not sure if the car has any other options.

Mechanically it looks like everything is there and visibly in good shape.

I am not a Z expert. I love 'em and would love to keep this car in the family for another 54 years, but it's not practical.

My legal role as Estate Administrator is to get a fair price for this vehicle. Look at the photos. Ask questions. I will do my best to answer or find out.

Thanks for reading.

Hello think

“original paint White exterior” - - what makes you think that?  Looks like it was originally Yellow.  A White 72 usually has a Red interior.

Not running/driving - with an Automatic Transmission and 100K miles. Looks like it is presently in Primer, with some dents/dings.  Perhaps a good “Project” for someone to take on.

Without seeing the undercarriage… $12K to $15K

Are you taking offers up to a certain time? How will you be deciding who to sell it to? What's your process?

Looks like some work to get it to a populated area. Could be a fun adventure though. Good luck.

Carl, you could be right but I did not notice evidence of any change in color until you asked the question. The undersides of the engine compartment may have a light yellow, as well as in back of the seats inside. I will look again more closely the next time I am there. I do not have any documentation about a change in color (or repairs or accidents). While it may look like primer, I do not think the white paint is primer. Under all the dirt I saw that the white paint is shiny in the few places that were not covered (just look at the photos of the glass).

And both red and black interiors were available with white, according to AI search. While the centers look like leather, the sides might be "pleather". I have some good photos of the driver's seat so maybe you can confirm that.

Zed yes I am open to offers. I am not on-site with the car and not within driving distance, so that needs to be co-ordinated. I am open to having an independent mechanic or prospective buyer view the car but all that cost and arrangement is up to the potential buyer. I can arrange for someone to open the barn door and be there while the inspection happens.

When I go back I will look for the radiator support sticker, car ID plate, and the production plate

Here's a similar car, linked below. Read the comments and the description and you'll see what people are looking for. A 1972 240Z is not super special so you might be disappointed in the offers if you're thinking of the 70 and 71 240Z prices. Beside that fact that the condition of the drivetrain is unknown, and it's an automatic. Maybe it was parked because the engine or transmission failed. Who knows.

If you have the time and know some people it might be worthwhile to get it running and driving if you want maximum value. But, considering the 1996 tag and where it's been sitting, I'd expect all of the hydraulics to be shot, and the rear brakes stuck, and probably the engine also. And it probably has mice living in it. So, lots of work involved. Hate to be a buzzkill but that's just the reality of all old cars that sit for years. If you can haul it over to close to I-5 you might get more people to come take a look.

I believe AI is mistaken - White 240Z's came with Blue interiors in 1970/71 and Red for 72/73 - the White 260Z in 74 finally came with a Black interior.

Good luck with the sale..

Zed thanks for the helpful comments and links. I was watching this auction take off. Yes, Modoc is remote but it's such an absolutely beautiful area- well worth the trip!

I'm agreeing with you more about the color and interior for the 72. Not sure why they would change it, but it appears they did. I will modify the post to reflect the uncertainty. A professional who inspects the car will be able to tell immediately. Still, the car appears to be solid all over and in good shape outside of the seats and upholstery. Project car for sure, but a good buy for the right person willing to do it.
