L series crank trigger question

Recommended Posts

In my daily perusal of CL I ran across an interesting photo in this posting.  Photo 22 shows what looks like a crank trigger wheel on a very stock looking 1973 240Z with supposedly 66k miles on the clock.  It does have an aftermarket coil, but the smog pump, carbs, and distributor are still in place on the pretty unmolested looking engine.  Any ideas on what we are looking at or why a carb car with a distributor would need a crank trigger?  My only guess is there's some kind of different ignition timing going on somewhere.  I'm starting an L28E build with Megasquirt for my 240Z and am looking at crank trigger options.

Thanks,

Looks like a 1981 turbo engine damper.  Might even be an L28 in that 240Z.  The wheel is there but where's the sensor?  See picture.

Nissan used the crankshaft mounted wheel for one model year then went to a distributor based system.  But there are a few aftermarket systems out there.

Here's one option.  You'll probably have to contact him, I can't figure out what, exactly, he's selling.  He tends to make good products though.  Web-site skills, not so hot.

Thanks Zed Head,

That's what I'm planning on doing at the moment.  A little $$, but seems like a good quality piece.  Jegs has the Professional Products reproduction euro style dampers that I'm planning on attaching it to.

I didn't realize that the turbo had come with a crank angle sensor, interesting.  Still doesn't explain why it's on a 1973 240Z with "one owner 1973 Datsun 240 Z with the original six cylinder factory four-speed, 66,212 original miles"   ?
