is 100 a good price on a 280zx tranny?

Featured Replies

100 is good. You could find a more expensive one if you want. To see if it is in good condition tilt the tranny on it's side and remove the drain plug. It has a magnet attached to it. Inspect the magnet it should have a real fine metallic powder on it, small amounts are normal. Unusually large pieces of metal is not good. This will only tell you if the tranny has been abused. The real test is to install it and run it.

To check if it's a five speed - attach the gear shift lever and go through the gears.

how expensive could a rebuild be?

I haven't priced one, but I'd expect to pay well over $500 for a complete rebuild of a 5 speed in the Bay area.

Call a local shop and ask. Estimates are free. If you're in the fremont area try Dando's.

union city... grew up in fremont.. I heard of that shop. I guess I'll give em a call up if I end up getting it in and its bad.

Are the 280 trannys compatible with the 240's L24 engine? Will they fit? If they do if that the best way to turn your 4 speed 240 into a 5 speed?
