Smog pump supercharger?

Featured Replies

Maybe the smoggy pump could be rigged to boost pressurized air through the carbs or throttle body. If the hoped-for performance improvement doesn't materialize, or worse, the car won't start, it could be used to send fresh air into the cabin.

In any case, it could be chromed, to add some extra bling to the engine. Plus it adds considerable weight to keep the front of the car down. It's got to be good for something.

How much boost do you think you could get out of a smog pump? Also, consider the sealing required for the air intake and carbs. I have a Paxton supercharger on my Avanti and it's a substantially different compressor/pump.

you have an Avanti? Very cool car, and I'm jealous!

Thanks! It's a 1963 Studebaker Avanti R2. I've had it about 40 years - almost as long as I've had my Z.

I remember seeing an new Avanti when I was a little kid. At the time it was the most "futuristic" looking car I'd ever seen, like it was from the Jetsons!.

There is a local auto shop in town that works on them.

I remember going to the introduction at the local Studebaker dealership to see the Avanti. Too young to drive and no money to buy one, but it left a lasting impression that was fulfilled about 13 years later. I exchanged letters with the designer, Raymond Loewy, over the years and treasure the correspondence. Neat car.

Neat, are you on SDC forum, I'm GTHawkwind up there.

Not on the SDC forum, but follow the Avanti Yahoo forum. I also have two '63 GT Hawks. One was my first car. I have a real problem parting with the cars I buy. My wife, the psychologist, says I'm auto-retentive. But she supports, and sometimes encourages, my problem. Lately she thinks I should get a Tesla. Not quite ready for another wonky car.

Cool, a 63 Hawk was almost my first car, I had been pining over this car that was sitting since I was 6, when I turned 18 I tried to buy it, but the owner was a jerk and closer inspection revealed massive amounts of bondo, and frame rot, so I walked away, and Bought a 1953 C-body coupe builder project, then got my brothers old 260z to daily while I build the Stude:classic: this is the forum btw General Studebaker-Specific Discussion

It's actually a great place to check out if your a stude guy.

Wow. Holy thread derail! Batman!

Considering the nature of the question and the sub forum it's in, derailment is probably OK. :)

Rave on about Studebakers all you want; I'd gone too long without sleep when I posted that, anyway. Like to see a photo of that Paxton hookup ,though.
