Does anyone know what kind of sealant was used inside the valve covers?

Or can somebody answer me this... is the sealant necessary?

It is my understanding it is like a sealing wax, needs to be heated well above engine temp to become plyable or melt. It is what holds the baffle & PCV tube in place.

Never used any, just a good gasket, properly tightened, should be enough to keep any oil from leaking.

Oops! Misread post, thought it was about the valve cover gasket.

Oh ok, the reason I ask is I have a "nissan" japanese valve cover and it has not been used in a while so the steel on the inside has surface rust... I assume I have to remove it to clean it up, but I wanted to know how to seal it once I get around to it? I can post pictures if necessary as well.
