If the smog pump on a 73 240 is removed are there adjustments to be made with anything? I have just removed mine and capped the ports. A friend swears that i will get 20 horse more out of the old girl, but could not tell me if any adjustments are to be made.

Don't know about any adjustments, but most of the "20" horsepower he's talking about was already there, but was being used to spin that stupid smog pump instead of your tires!
