Posted November 10, 200222 yr comment_18718 Does it follow that if I have the later electrical distributor out of a 79-81 then I need to get a matching tach out of that car and only that car ... and then possibly swap faces to make it look like it belongs?I ask because I have a random spare 260Z tach lying around - can't use that can I?-e Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/3558-tach-for-later-79-81-electrical-distributor/ Share on other sites
November 11, 200222 yr comment_18744 I have been running my 73 tacho with no real problems backing up to a 1982 280zx Hitatchi electronic distributor for about 7 years and the only mod I did was remove the crancking circuit from the ignition (balast resistor) and run a full 12V ignition with a late model high energy OEM coil. In my opinion if you have the equipment on hand give it a go, there are people on line who can help with the small setbacksHope this helps Steve:classic: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/3558-tach-for-later-79-81-electrical-distributor/#findComment-18744 Share on other sites
November 11, 200222 yr comment_18784 Eric,Just like Steve, I have the "Match book" Nissan EI Distributor, With the Balast circut bypassed and a 12 Volt coil in my 72. The fellow that rebuilt and recurved the distributor for me (Gary Boone) warned that I MIGHT have a problem with the tach. But After installation, No problem. Then, when I scapped my first 72, I swapped the whole set up into the new Lime Green 72 and still had no problem. November 12, 200222 yr Author comment_18820 I'll try it first with a spare '73 tach then the 260Z tach I have....I asked because I knew someone else with a '72 and the same EI distributor and his tach seems to have issues past 5K rpm... we were wondering if we needed the later 280 tach to work with the EI distrib... guess not....Thanks again Victor (got the heater control panel off just fine BTW...)-e Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/3558-tach-for-later-79-81-electrical-distributor/#findComment-18820 Share on other sites
