Ok, so now I've gone to the aftermarket air cleaners after removing the smog stuff I don't need anymore because of the header install. So what vacuum lines do I need, some stock lines went to the air cleaner assembly, do I just plug those now? Any help is appreciated!

The valve cover breather should vent into an air cleaner, as should the two vent hoses off the carb float bowls. Don't plug any of those. You have probably already removed the air pump, so the other big hose of the back of the factory airbox is probably already gone.

Did you install ram tubes (air horns) inside your new aftermarket air filters? If not, you may have actually hurt the performance, not helped it. The SU carbs need an air horn to smooth the airflow. Without them, the metering is not as steady as it should be. Too much turbulence inside the carb throat. The air horns built into the factory airbox are actually very efficient, the carbs will work better with the factory box and horns than it will with aftermarket filters w/o horns.

Thanks Arne,

This is exactly the reason I put the question up in the forum. So let me get this straight, if I go with either the longflow, or k/n airfilters I should also install a pair of venturi's with them?...Do you know if there is room inside those air cleaners?

Yes, absolutely.

Not sure. I'm still using the stock airbox on mine. I assume that there must be an air filter that's tall enough to work, but don't know which ones.

I removed the smog stuff from my 71... I was going to purchase a set of ram tubes from ZTherapy but they didn't have any... so they sent me to a company called Advance Performance Technology... their website is http://www.aptfast.com/

They offered me two options one was a stub stack, and the other was 2-1/2 inch stack, due to the cost difference I opted for the stub stacks. Can't tell you how well it works yet.. I'm still putting the ignition, and other stuff together into the car.

I think the stubs were like 70.00 bucks for the pair, and the 2-1/2 inch tubes were twice the cost. Here a picture off of google showing the MSS4 stub stacks

i took my old filter and cut out the air horns and made them work inside the K & N filters that i used. i was missing the top part of the filter box anyway, and didn't mind cutting out the air horns. very easy to do, and no cost, other than the K & N filters, and a couple of hours of your time.
