Alternator swap

Featured Replies

Is it true that the later alternators from 280's will fit a '70 without alteration?

If so, do I have to replace the ammeter?

Thanks Mike

you can repalce the alt with 74 260Z and up to 84 maxima's. You will have to switch to an internel volt regulator but there is a plug and play adapter for sale to do that.

Other than that no other modification is needed. Look around the forum by searching

alt upgrade

and you will find many posts and ideas. A direct bolt alt from any L6 series engine will bolt right up just mod the wiring like I said before.

74-77 were externally regulated and use basically the same alternator as the 70-73 240Z but there were differences in the plug on the voltage regulator depending on the year. 78 and up are internally regulated.

I do also recommend that you use the belt for the later alternators when doing the swap because the earlier belt is too narrow and will not hold up.
