Steering wheel lockup

Featured Replies

Took the '72 for a drive for the first time this weekend and on hard turns the steering wheel just locks up out of nowhere. You have to turn the key a little for it to unlock. Anyone know what is the issue and a fix for it?

Dont know this fix, But it sounds like the "anitheft" steering lock is messing up.

I hope you mean it does that when you not driving it. The problem is in the ignition cylinder. Combination of the tumbler itself being worn and the steering lock mechanism being worn. When right, you shouldn't be able to remove the key in any position but lock and the lock won't lock in any position but the lock position with the key pulled anywhere from about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch to completely out of the ignition.

Thanks guys. Got a new ignition switch from a Nissan Recycling facility. Hopefully should fix the problem.

I hope you got the LOCK and not just the SWITCH.

If it's the Steering Wheel Lock that's causing the problem, a new electrical switch won't do anything for you.
