Desmogging Question

Featured Replies

I removed the flat tops from my 73, and installed a set of 3 screw round tops. I also removed all of the smog stuff. Behind the distributor, there's an outlet tube (about 1" diameter) that comes from the crackcase, and used to go to the smog pump via a braided line. Is it okay to block the outlet off? Can the outlet tube be removed and plugged, it would look alot better without it?

Thanks.

Is that the crankcase breather tube you're referring to? If so, I wouldn't block it.

Paul, on the early 240Z this braided hose runs from the block to the PCV valve on the balance tube.

See the braided hose in the dead center of the attached photo?

It's definitely the crankcase breather (PCV) outlet. I wasn't sure if it went to the smog pump or the balancing tube. I thought it went to the smog pump, but I could be wrong. I marked just about everything when I took the engine apart, but I forgot to mark this one. I'll post a pic when I get home.

Don't really need a picture. If you plug it, the vapors from the crankcase will have to be vented somewhere or you'll have problems.

I agree, don't plug it.

The hose that you need is large on one end, and small on the other. Readily available from any parts house, Motorsport, Courtesy, whatever. It runs directly between the tube in the block that you described and the PCV valve on the balance tube.

Thanks everyone. I think the tube being different diameters at the two ends is what confused me. I'll look through my boxes of old parts, I'm sure the hose I need is in there somewhere.

Speaking of which the EGR Tube on my '77 cracked.

Can I saw this thing in half at the crack and use a rubber hose with some

clamps, and Gasket Sealent maybe, to connect the two halfs back together?

How about getting it welded back?

Hope it's cheap but A shop here in town can do it if I bring it in maybe.

Was hopeing for a quick fix :stupid:
