Front Caliper Removal

Featured Replies

I am replacing my stock '77 280Z front calipers and can not get the damn bolts broke loose. I have socked them with penetrating oil but I guess I need to let them soak longer. Short of a hacksaw and a blow torch LOL any suggestions on how I can loosen them. Thanks.

280Z on its way to being a daily driver

I find that frozen bolts break loose the best after soaking with Kroil, but have had great results when using PB Blaster and heat from a propane torch, when possible. It will be just the initial cracking loose. Don't be afraid to use some leverage with an extended pipe or johnson bar, and apply some muscle.

If it is your first time in removing these fasteners, it can be tough.

I find a socket bar with a length of steel pipe [24" min.]slipped over it, gives you a great advantage when attempting to loosen these.

Just make sure the socket is a snug fit and engaged properly, then gently haul on the end of the bar:devious:

I am not that well educated in this topic, but would an impact wrench be a suitable tool in this instance? The "hammering" effect has loosened many very sticky situations for me. Or is there a reason that this would not be recommended for this situation?

Yes, an impact wrench would probably be quite OK, providing you can get good access to the fasteners.

I don't have one so it didn't occur to me:surprised

I just finished bleeding my new front calipers. I ended up using the 24" breaker bar and a lot of leverage to get them off. Thanks for all the help.
