HELP! Brake light driving me crazy

Featured Replies

So the brake light located in the speedo is constantly on  even with the E-brake handle in the down possition. I am in need of the relay that sits under the passenger seat. Does anyone have one out there that is not being used. This would be for a 1976 280Z. I have one from a 1978 280 but they do not interchange. I know this is the problem due to the fact that if you tap it with a screw driver or something like that it will go off for a bit and then turn back on.

if I remeber right that metal relay seprates from the case and you might be able to clean it and check the tips of the contacts, good luck!

The brake light also comes on when there's an imbalance detected in the braking system between the front and rear brakes. This could be from low fluid. I suppose you could verify that this is the problem by temporarily unplugging the lead from the sensor and see if the light only comes on when the handle is up.

Mike,

I have done a total diagnosis on the problem and it is the relay under the seat. It drives me crazy.

I'll check the local wrecking yard and see if they have a one, BTW did you try looking a NAPA's website? They might have a new one...

Hey, I just checked the NAPA website and under the parts catalog for relays sensors and switches they have about 10 different ones, some have five blades and some with four. The good news is they have the oem part numbesr. BTW there called multi-function relays. They are not id'd by what they do however....I hope this helps..BTW do you have the part number?

I have not checked around at the auto parts stores I thought maybe someone had one in a parts car. I pulled mine apart today and found the problem was a bad wire coming from the coil inside and there was no way to fix it. O well.
