I should have asked this. Are you attempting to use the 83 shifter? Perhaps all you need to do is change to the earlier shifter.

Just got mine back from the shop (new 5 spd with 3.545 dif) - plenty of torque (for me), a little quieter on the highway and with the 77 shifter feels very similar to the old setup.

Thanks for any advise offered in various strings.

Mart, I know this is an old post but how far back is the bent from the pivot point 3 inches?
