If your car is an ex-USA car then standard front springs will be much longer than the rears.

If it's a euro car counting the number of coils and comparing to the spec in a Haynes manual (I think) was OK for me.

thankyou for your help. It's an ex-US car. Unfortunately I can't check before the weekend 'cause the springs are in a garage some miles away. As far as I remember they were of equal length. Let's see.
