Car wont Rev?!

K.here's the thing.I'm almost positive the problem is my carbs but my dad says I should check compression etc before I assume its the carbs.Just thought I'd see what you guys think.Now for the symptoms:

I havent drove it but did this while on a jackstand(brother had to use rim)hehe.I can start the car.Idles fine.But if I step on the gas all the way car will just run rough and RPM's wont go go up at all.Just sound's like its being overchoked with gas or something.

RPM's wouldnt go up so I decided to mess around and if I put the gas pedal about 1/4 and it'll run rough but I hold it there for a little while then slowly rev about 3/4 then full then it'll run rough then finally start to rev and RPM's skyrocket just like normal.

Wild Shot in the Dark.

Check the Vacuum Advance Mechanism INSIDE the Distributor. If you see a few small ball bearings rolling around the dizzy underneath the point plate, then your vacuum slide plate has gone blooey.

When you accelerate, the initial amount of gas allows the engine to begin revving and therefore generating more vacuum. The vacuum advance on the dizzy changes the timing in order to cause the engine to continue accelerating. If the timing isn't being affected, the only way to get the engine to rev is to very slowly increase the amount of fuel the pistons receive.

He's talking about a carbureated car so he wouldn't have one of those. But why pay $100 for a temp sensor? That's why I pick up extra parts like the temp sensor, cold start valve, thermotime switch, etc. when I'm at the junkyard. Since they generally have no clue what those parts are, they cost next to nothing. I take them home and test them and keep the good ones. I never pay Nissan (Renault) dealer prices for anything!

If the timing has been set correctly and the points as well, check the carbs to make sure there is fluid in the domes and check the sync of the opening of the two carbs , doesn't sound like a carb tuning would hurt but make sure the basics are there first , but not compression , good luck
