Caps on side of l24

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I was taking a look at my engine today, and noticed that the circular caps pluged on the oil filter side of the block. One of them seems to have a hole in it. More like a broken hole the size of this:cry: . What should I do? Can I replace it or should I not worry. If so how do I get a new one and whats the process of removal.

Thanks

Are you talking about the welch plugs /freeze plugs? If there is a hole in one of them the block will leak coolant, unless the block is all silted up inside. You need to pull it out and tap in a new one (with a bit of gasket cement around the edges to make it secure).

You should be able to get some from any auto store.

Don't tap too hard or it'll go into the water gallery!

Thanks

Use a Screwdriver and a hammer. Drive screwdriver through it, and pry it out. When installing new one, you use a large socket or piece of pipe that just barely fits into the depression of the new plug and CAREFULLY tap it evenly into the block until the lip is just flush with the outer surface of the block. BTW, if one is bad, examne ALL of them to verify condition. They have all been installed the same length of time, and have been subjected to the same corrosive environment. They are on BOTH SIDES OF THE BLOCK.

As for the "piece" missing from the old plug.................drain and flush the coolant system thoroughly.
