tamo3 Posted October 31, 2014 Share #1 Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) I'm working on upgrading electrical system. My car is '75 280z. My goal is : Replace Alternator to CS144 with removing external voltage regulator. Remove Shunt. Add extra fuse with install Maxi-fuse box. (75 has only 2 fusible link) Add ignition relay (75 does not have it) Swap Ammeter and Voltmeter My '75 280z has only 5 wire for external voltage regulator. When I googled, several people encounter issue for the missing #1 wire, which is green/red colored. Blues web site is always helpful. There is answer for this. HELP 75 Alternator swap I just create illustration for this solution. I will keep update the progress. Edited October 31, 2014 by tamo3
tamo3 Posted October 31, 2014 Author Share #2 Posted October 31, 2014 You can grab CS144 alternator from Cadillac DeVille. Try to find 92-94 in the junkyard. The hardest part is to remove pulley. There is taper collar that prevent from removing the pulley. CS144 pulley removal - tapered collar type - International Full Size Jeep Association I could not remove the the taper collar, so I grinded to remove the pulley. Just follow instruction video to rebuild alternator. Part 1 Part 2 Paint the cover too. completed.

tamo3 Posted October 31, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted October 31, 2014 Shunt! I searched on web, but I could not find any good information about '75 280z shunt. I learn some earlier model has shunt inside of the car (maybe 240z, 260z?) later model is in the engine bay. This is the shunt!

rossiz Posted November 2, 2014 Share #8 Posted November 2, 2014 interesting post - but i'm still a little fuzzy on why the switch to this particular CS144 model.the "performance curves" graph seems to start at about 1,200 rpm, and i don't know what the pulley ratio is in relation to the crankshaft, so i'm not sure if this alternator kicks in sooner or provides an overall greater output or what...interested in finding out though! tamo3 Posted November 5, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted November 5, 2014 I haven't measure and calculate the ratio. I will do it later. Got the donor connector from '76 280z. Add diode. This dongle is for '75 280z with 5 wires. Can't use this for other year model.
EuroDat Posted November 5, 2014 Share #10 Posted November 5, 2014 Hi Tamo, Do you have any photo's of the pulley? Nice photo's on removing the old one. Just wondering how the 280Z pulley fits or do you use another pulley all together. Great photo's. Makes the modification clear and easy to follow. It will be intersting to see how this unit performs.Chas
tamo3 Posted November 5, 2014 Author Share #11 Posted November 5, 2014 Here is the photo. This is original Alternator. V-pulley consists of 2 pieces. The hole diameter is same. I can just mount it to CS144. Mount the V-Pulley onto CS144.
tamo3 Posted January 6, 2015 Author Share #12 Posted January 6, 2015 Working on Voltmeter re-wiring. This is ground earth. - Green/white is connect to same as Ammeter. I need to find where I should merge this Voltage line near the fuse box.... Installed and run the wire. Anyone direct me where should I connect the voltage measurement wire? Thanks, tamo3
