Wood gear shift knob
I'm pretty sure "op" does mean optional, here's another example of "op" in the parts book for wheel selection.

Wood gear shift knob
Here's a parts book page showing an optional one called "KNOB-CONTROL LEVER SKIN" PN C2885-E4600, the others shown say wood.

Rack and pinion U-bolt clamp ? 71Z
I agree that setting the gap to be loosely touching is best. I noticed that if the gap between the bumper and the cross member was set to 4mm on my car then it would not help in the unlikely chance that the rack rotated. On my car the gap between the pinion gear housing, at the face where the pinion shaft exits, and the cross member is less than 3mm, so that would hit before the bumper did. See the area pointed to by the red arrow in this picture.

Panel Alignment
I just found this TSB regarding the cowl top panel support issue, it was implemented in Mar. '71. The complete 1969 to 1972 TSB document can be found in our downloads section. Strangely it's in the manuals folder, not the service bulletin folder. Mike

240Z Resto - 01/1970 Car
Here is a good discussion regarding the steering rack bumper/bracket clamp, likely was not factory installed on your early car. My 7/70 car does have one, no idea if it was factory or dealer installed. Strangely I couldn't find any mention of it in either my 1970 or 1972 FSM. http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/48076-rack-and-pinion-u-bolt-clamp-71z/?hl=%2Bsteering+%2Brack+%2Bbumper#entry437353

Lost my Online parts link.
I am, and have been, using IE11 as my browser and have also noticed the loss of the expandable side menu on the left as you mentioned. It was definitely better with that feature IMO. There was a good Microfiche page for S30's on xenonzcar.com but it is still not working, here's the link to the ref page, it's part way down after the FSM's: http://www.xenonzcar.com/s30/reference.html Maybe they will get the microfiche page working soon, most of the other links are working. I'm not seeing the "?" mark problem.

C211 FSM ?
I suspected that it was not exactly what you were looking for, but there is a lot of good info there. I think that L20A/L24 engine manual was for 1970 as the 240Z FSM for the first year was only available as a two volume set with neither the engine or body/chassis book having the year on the front cover. The early FSM books did have an issue date on the back cover. Good luck on your search.

C211 FSM ?
Not a C211, but here is a link to a site that has a C210 FSM: http://datsun510.com/manuals/ My Skyline knowledge is very limited so I don't know if this will be of any help. Mike

Missing Door Seals / weatherstrip
You got me looking at the seals in this area on my car and I noticed one other small seal, on the lower forward corner of the quarter windows. When the door is closed it will virtually mate with the small seal on the door just mentioned above. I'm missing the one on the LH side, here's a couple of pictures and a parts book image: MSA has these: http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/classic03a09/34-1014 http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/classic03a09/34-1015 HTH Mike

Missing Door Seals / weatherstrip
I think this is the other seal Jim is referring to: http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/46661-upper-corner-door-seal-picture-please/ I believe it's items 9 & 10 here:

1970 - 1986 Z Poster
I guess it's presented as a model evolution, plus anniversary cars. Hard to include all of our great cars in a 24" x 36" format and still have a high level of detail. I like the quality of the artwork which was done by well known automotive artist Gavin Macleod, who passed away in 2003. He is remembered for his Formula 1 and other motorsport works. http://www.gavinmacleodcollection.com/artist-biography/index.html Mike

dimmer question
Under dash to the right of the steering wheel. See item 17 on this picture from the owners manual. This is from a 1970 but I think the '72 is in the same place. HTH Mike

Panel Alignment
Hey Dan, my decal is still the original, my car is unrestored under the hood. I checked out your thread on this subject http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/19815-interest-in-master-vac-decal-reproduction/ and I noticed that my label is actually a little different, it doesn't include the patent number and the format is a little different, otherwise very similar. Here's mine: Mike ps: Sorry to Ken for the hi-jack

Dan, I think your description of the "grill cowl top" support is correct. Here are a couple of pics showing this (I did an inspection of this area earlier this year). The foam pads on mine are about 3/16" to 1/4" thick and the material is relatively soft. Mike

Finally got some shots of my Z
Looks you are still missing a digit in the SN, are you sure it's not 400249? I think 40249 would put you in the range of a '71 240Z. All the same very nice car.

1972 Datsun 240z steering column cover and 6 screws
Well then it looks like a trip to the hardware store is in order, as previously was stated If you purchase a reproduction part you can't assume that the four screws that join the two halves will be exactly the same as oem. This older topic, that you have recently posted on, has a very good description on the other two screws, see post #4 by george71z. http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/40203-needed-installation-hardware-specs-for-240z-steering-column-cover-clamshell/ I see you were looking for a picture of the screws. We all know a picture is worth a thousand words, but in this case I think George's description is more than enough. For me solving some of these small issues myself is one of the joys of owning a classic car.

1972 Datsun 240z steering column cover and 6 screws
Look closer on the MSA site, the description says that the screws are included. http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/classic08d22/40-3125A Problem solved.

Cataloging 240z factory manufacture paint marks
Here are a couple of pics showing some yellow paint marks that were revealed as I was doing some cleaning under my 7/70 last winter. The marks on the mustache bar were very randomly applied. The cross member at the front of the diff also has some yellow paint marks, I will try to get a better picture next time the car is up on jack stands. Mike

vin number questions
I think that the Black Dragon SN data came from the Nissan Parts micro fiche, mine is dated 1979. The Nissan document also shows the same problem with the with 1970 SN's, likely the May '70 date was an error and should have read Dec '70. Here is the micro fiche page showing the issue. Mike

If you accidentally make a new duplicate topic you can go back in re-name the topic with the editing tools. I have edited the title of a topic when I made a spelling mistake. Maybe re-name it something like: "Oops Double Post - Do Not Reply".
