Which MP3 Player?
There are several sources now other than Apple for battery replacement kits that a handy person can install at home. A couple of examples: http://www.smalldog.com http://www.macsales.com I also have a 3rd gen iPod (only 10 GB), and even have an FM modulator for it. If I had the choice, I'd try to get a head unit (or amp) with Aux. input, rather than FM or cassette adapters.

'Bout time I announce myself
Hi, all. I've been hanging out and posting here for a few months now, but since I now do own a Z, thought it was time to go public. I live in Oregon, about 40 miles South of Mike, and 110 miles South of Gary (Beandip). Corresponded with both of them prior to my recent purchase. I now own a Series I 240Z, HLS30-12746. I won't go into detail here, because I am blogging my progress at the site linked in my signature. Don't expect a how-to site with lots of pictures as everything unfolds, because I can't be bothered to wash up to grab the camera when I'm working on the car. But if you wish, follow along as I make slow headway.

opinion please
Yours appear to be worse than mine. The rust holes in mine are larger but are just one localized hole per side, not spread out as yours are. I will probably just do the patch panel on mine, but I might replace them if they looked like yours. Just my opinion, of course.

Any Portland area 240z junkyards?
If anyone really does get in touch with Danny's, I'd love to hear about it. I've e-mailed and left a message on his phone, no reply to either.

Car Covers?
My Z will have to sit outdoors at times, and I looked at the Tyvek covers but decided on a traditional Technalon (aka Evolution) cover instead. I ordered a custom fitted cover (early Z with small bumpers, one mirror pocket) from MSA. It should be here today, or perhaps early next week at the latest. I'll post a review after I get it.

I found "The One" for me! - Pictures
Yes, it does. I saw it in the last row of pics on his page.

transmission tunnel offset
I don't think it has anything to do with RHD, but it just has to be that way for fit. If you have a transmission out of the car and look at it, you'll see that the bellhousing is flared out on the right side for the starter. The tunnel is flared on that side to match.

Mismatch engine in a 280
No reason I can see that a ZX engine would be bad. My 240Z came with one in it. The ZX engines aren't all that much different than the Z 2.8s. I'd be much more concerned about what the brand new paint might be hiding...

doors ??
Good to know. So to summarize, if I need to replace the doors on my early '71 (and I may need to), I can use later doors (with minor mods) as long as they have the same type door striker. Probably up through '76, subject to verification. Sound right?

ID intake components
The overflows from the SUs on my old '67 MGB were just routed under the car. Times change...

only one turn signal works
That is generally true for turn signals, but hazard relays are typically designed to flash any good bulbs, even if one or more are burned out.
-
only one turn signal works
I should clarify - it's not the bulbs because when I switch on the hazards all the bulbs (both front and all 6 rear) flash at a normal rate. I doubt that it is the relay causing the right side no flash, as it works (slowly) for the left side. I'll probably replace it anyway to speed up the flash. My best guess right now is the column switch.
-
only one turn signal works
How odd. The '71 I picked up last weekend is the opposite - the left side blinks (a bit slowly), and the right side does nothing at all. No click, no light, no nothing. It's not the bulbs because the hazards work normally. I'll post back when I find it.

'74 260Z 4BBL Intake
Yup, off an '83 ZX. Yes, it has all the components, but no it was not installed properly. Pretty much cobbled together by a previous owner (twice removed). I thought about trying to debug it, but the guy I bought the car from is giving me a set of '71 SUs with manifold and airbox. I figure it'll be simpler to go back to the carbs than it would be to fix the injection, as I'd pretty much have to start over.

L67 Engine swap in 71 240Z
3.8 liter GM V6 out of a Pontiac Bonneville SSEi, Monte Carlo SS, etc. 240 HP in stock form.

'74 260Z 4BBL Intake
The "mandatory upgrade" comment came from a 260Z owner. Well, I suppose even the 4 bbl would be an improvement over the 260Z flat-tops. But when I yank the injection out of my car, it's getting round-top SUs.

Carb manifold gasket for P79 head
So the carb intakes have plenty of metal to cover the notch and still seal OK? I ask this because I don't yet have the intakes in my possession.

Carb manifold gasket for P79 head
The '71 240Z I just bought has an L28 (F54/P79) in it, complete with injection. I will be going back to SUs, but have a question, what manifold gasket? I've seen posts saying to just use a carb-type manifold gasket to cover the notch in the intake port. But I haven't seen any carb gaskets that have the later exhaust port shape for my P79 head. Am I not looking to the right suppliers? Is there a special gasket for this? Or am I just mistaken?

L28 EFI Conversion to SU's
The '71 240Z I just bought has an L28 in it, complete with injection. I too will be going back to carbs, and have two questions. What manifold gasket? I've seen posts saying to just use a carb-type manifold gasket to cover the notch in the intake port. But I haven't seen any carb gaskets that have the later exhaust port shape for my P79 head. Am I not looking to the right suppliers? Is there a special gasket for this? Or am I just mistaken? The fuel pump in my car is probably not going to be able to be regulated down to a low enough pressure for the SUs. What do you folks recommend for an affordable low-pressure electric pump?

Budget research - how much to pay?
Early '71s will have had the same steering wheel (without holes) as a '70 does. Mine is one of them. If your car has the vents in the hatch, your steering wheel probably had no holes.

Budget research - how much to pay?
Gary, I also have a '71, and for a factory original dash that is uncracked I'd say that those prices might be a touch high, but still in the ball park. Assuming you don't want to pay that much, there are three options: Live with what you have - Mine, for example, has only one small crack. I will live with that until it gets significantly worse. Install an ABS cap - These are available for the top only (about $50) or to cover the entire dash pad down to the console (about $95). They can look OK at a glance, but are obviously just covers when you look closely. Have your dash pad restored - Probably the best option is to have your existing pad restored. I've heard that prices for this range from $500-700, and the results (while not totally concours original) are very good. Do a search for 'dash restoration' and you should find some links.

JC Whitney door seals
If I order from them are they going to start sending me their stupid catalogs every three weeks again? It took two moves and several years to get off their mailing list. There must be another place to get this stuff from!
