White plug indicate that it's running lean, and the backfire and loss of power at top can also indicate that. Since the rear plugs are whiter than the front, I'd guess that there is something wrong with the rear carb. Low float level, way whacked mixture setting, needle came loose and fell into the nozzle, stuck piston, ??? Anyway, it looks to me as thought the rear carb is rear you should start hunting.

Joey, I can see the thumbnail on the frontpage. Looks like the rocker panel is rusted through. And yes, you need to have that repaired, the rockers (also called sills) are an important part of the body structure.

    Photo is pending admin approval.
  4. Yeah, the injection on the 280Z was pretty simple, electrically. Not as simple on the ZX's, but that's not what Dave is looking for.
  5. Dave, I'm down in the Eugene area, and from what I've seen it shouldn't be too hard to find a decent 280Z automatic, as long as you're patient. You want me to keep my eyes open for you? Side benefit to an auto - The cars with autos all seemed to be in better shape than the sticks when I was looking for my 240.
  6. It was listed on the auction as HLS30-01281. So not quite a 3 digit car, but still pretty cool. Here is a link to the auction: Kurt's 240Z
  7. Good question. I know that VDO used to make little plastic bulb covers that they shipped with their gauges. You typically got a clear bulb with both green and red-orange covers. Don't know if those are still available, or whether they'd fit the bulbs used on the Zs. Hmm.. Edit: Did a quick Google, maybe these might be OK? www.egauges.com
  8. The green filters are plastic lenses, not paper. If you remove them you could probably use different colored bulbs instead. But be careful not to use bulbs of higher wattage than comes stock, for fear of overheating the wiring and/or cooking the gauges. I don't know about the 280Z, but the 240Z came with 3.4 watt bulbs in the gauges.
  9. Don't know how Mass. emissions laws are, best would be to check with you local authorities to be certain.

I tried ATF in my carbs, got that same backfire on quick throttle openings. I suspect that the slides are opening too far, too fast. I plan to go to 20wt. in mine, as recommended by my FSM. ATF is typically about 5wt. IIRC.
  11. I used Tri-flow on mine. The teflon in it seems to last a long time, also.

Good point. I won't make any plans until I get it off the block.

I've got an E88 head that might have a problem. The opening where the thermostat housing attaches looks as if it has eroded in spots. I'm afraid that there may not be enough surface left for the gasket to seal against. Has anyone seen this issue? Is it possible to have this welded and re-surfaced? Or is this head simply scrap metal?

The inner and outer tie rod ends should be greased. But if the lube is low inside the rack and pinion tube itself (a rare problem), GL4 gear oil should be added.
  15. Stuart, your profile doesn't have your location listed. If you enter that so we all know where you live perhaps we can keep our eyes out for a better car for you. For I agree with John - that one will take a lot of work to get back on the road. Better to start with an already running car if you can afford it.
  16. Mostly just the hassles getting everything to line up, and laying on my back on the passenger side to get all the wiring reconnected. I had the thing out of the car in 30 minutes or less. Took several hours to get it back in. No big problems, just awkward and time consuming.
  17. Update - The dash harness has been replaced!! As well as the horribly melted fusebox. I think it's all better now, we'll see if the car still draws the battery down while it's sitting. If not, I've got it licked. Man, the dash is a lot harder to put back in the car, than it was to remove it!
  18. Bigger alternators can be good, but lack of amps isn't the big problem with the headlights. Running all the amps that the headlights draw through a 35 year old headlight switch and fusebox is. A different alternator doesn't address that at all, but the relay harness does.

Maybe. But on the other hand, there are a few people out there - not many, but a few - who are quite pleased with their Holley four barrel setups. If you can get it tuned properly, it might run quite fine. I personally have no experience with them on a Z, however. I can say that the only Holley I have personally used was on a small block Chevy, where the proper jetting was not too hard to do, lots of hot rodders know what to do on a Chevy V8. It ran fine, nice and strong. Mileage was worse than the factory Rochester, though.
  20. Makes sense. That was pretty much what I thought as well. Didn't know what VIN the Series II started with for sure until now though. Thanks, Carl.

You won't find many people on this board who have experience with the Holley carb, and even fewer who like them and know how to tune them. Maybe on hybridz.org?
  22. I'm not surprized. You have the same whell that I have. Not sure when they changed to the wheel with holes.
  23. Depends on how original it is, but it looks like an early '71 to me. It is a Series 1, but might be a really late Series 1 since the steering wheel has the holes in the spokes. My '71 (10/70) has no holes in the spokes, so I'd guess that is a 12/70 or maybe 1/71 car.EDIT: Oops! I missed the VIN. Probably earlier than mine with a later steering wheel on it. Either that, or the VIN is a typo and should be 18105, not 08105.

Not ready for prime time. It's coming along, but I don't expect to actually have it on the road for several months at best. And once I get that done, it'll be time to save for rust, body and paint work.

Total fluke deal. I got no owner's manual or anything like that, but after 35 years the Service and Warranty booklet was still there! Who knows why? The first owner's name was there too - I thought about contacting him just for fun, but when I Googled him one of the first hits was his obituary. RIP.
