Black Dragon dash
Herb, Don't know about question 1. Question 2: You don't NEED a steering wheel puller. Just loosen the nut but not all the way. Just so it's almost off. I've always been able to hit the steering wheel with my palms from behind. You can also GENTLY use a rubber mallet to tap the wheel from behind. The nut acts as a stop in case the wheel isn't on as tight as it should be and prevents the datsun logo planted on your forehead! Good luck. Dave Ruiz

SU HS6 on the Z???
Marco, I would check with Bruce at ZTherapy. My guess is they won't work (at least easily). I converted my 76 FI with a pair of 72 SU's and they work great. Sorry I can't give you a definitive answer. I'm sure others will chime in. Dave Ruiz

Bushing refresh Project
Tomohawk, There is also the option of a ball & socket Rod kit from Black Dragon pg 40 under "Performance Suspension" listed as Tension / Compression (T-C) Rod Kit. MSA also sells the same thing. I replaced my stock TC Bushings on my 76 280Z with this set-up and it works great. All of my driving is street. Dave Ruiz

How hard is it to replace the filler neck
Bart, Take a look at the article right below your thread. To answer your question: It's not difficult... just time consuming. I did my 76 280Z about a month ago and replaced all hoses, POR-15'd the inside and outside of the tank, added a Fram G3 filter before the fuel pump, and replaced the fuel sending unit gasket. It will be a lot easier if you jack up the back of your car. Make sure you have the car supported by other jacks. Loosen the straps and lower the tank (Empty). There are 3 screws that hold the filler neck collar in place. This is accessed underneath the filler collar. Sometimes they are covered by dirt. I attached my filler tube to my tank (after heating it with a heating gun) then fed it through the filler hole and it took all of about 6 minutes. The filler tube is pretty stout so don't be too concerned about "hurting it". Make sure any hoses that you replace are fuel rated and NOT heater hose. There is one hose from the tank to the vent tank that has 180 degree bend. This hose is not readily available and most people use 5/8" fuel hose. You can make the bend by getting a lot of the hose and letting it bend naturally. You can also get a piece of 1/2 stainless steel tubing (about 6 inches in length) and have it bent to 180 degrees by a machine shop, muffler shop, or buy a tube bender. Just make sure that whatever technique you use make sure that you don't have any kinks in your fuel hoses or your car will stall ( I speak from experience). If you do use POR-15 just make sure you take your time. Follow the directions and you'll do fine. It took me about a week to treat the tank: 3 days to air out the tank and another 4 days to allow the POR-15 to cure. Start the tank early in the day as it takes a couple of hours to treat the tank. Make sure that you POR-15 the tank straps too as they are hard to come by. This topic has been covered extensively here and at HybridZ.com Search articles here entitled: "Care in removing Gas Tank Parts" and "Another Fuel System Question". Good luck. Dave Ruiz

tune up please :P
Dustin, There is also another guy who has is very good with flat top carburetors. You can find him at HybridZ.com and Zcar.com. His name is TonyD and is a goldmine of information. HOWEVER he does not take kindly to uneducated questions and will fry you mercilessly! (well...as much that can be done over the internet). Read some of his posts and make sure you search and really do your homework (he'll know if you haven't). Dave Ruiz

Dustin, Go to zcar.com and search for the name: Kammy. He use to be a frequent contributor to zcar.com. and lives in Hawaii. He hasn't been on the site for a few years. He was extraordinarily helpful. I don't have any contact information other than what may be on zcar.com. Dave Ruiz

280z fuel tank problem
Are your fuel lines clogged? Do you know the extent of the condition of the tank? How about the fuel pump? If your tank is in decent condition you can recoat it yourself with a product like POR-15's tank renew kit (~$70.00). If you do recoat the tank replace all of your fuel hoses and check the condition of the fuel filler hose as well. New sending units are very expensive but can be had. Check Arizona Z Car, Z man of Washington, classifieds. etc. This topic has been discussed recently and there is a nice write-upon this site. I just did my 76 tank about a month ago with POR-15 and it turned out really well. It took about a week. Also coat the fuel tank straps as they are hard to come by. Good luck. Dave Ruiz

The October Sacramento Z Car Reunion
Rob, Does any selling of parts occur at these meetings? I have a few Z parts I'd like to sell but I don't know if it's bad etiquette. I've been trying to attend at least one of these events but I'm coming from Mendocino County and I finally got my 280Z healthy enough to make a 3 hour drive. Dave Ruiz:)

73 Center Console/Choke Control/AC Question
Jim, I mounted a choke bracket to the transmission tunnel under the ash tray using a piece of metal as the support. I'm sorry I don't have a photo but I found articles on Hybrid Z under:"Lever relocation" and "Choke bracket". If you have the DVD from Z Therapy: "Datsun 240-280ZX Tune Up" they show how to make a re-enforced choke plate Dave Ruiz

What I did today
Mike, Place a jack under the strut and raise until the TC rod is level. Install the rear part of the TC rod first. It should go in with plenty of clearance for the bushings. By the way...what are those seats in your Z? Dave Ruiz

Fuel Pouring out of front Carb
I looked up BTR Engineering and they no longer list a web site. What little I do know about patents is BTR can buy the rights. They would also have to pay the yearly maintenance fees. Both of which are not inexpensive. If you're really dying to find out, there is a patent attorney who is also a Z enthusiast by the name of Gary Baker at either zhome.com or AtlanticZcarclub who I'm sure would know. Maybe the Chinese will manufacture them. . . they really abide by patent law! Sorry...I digress. Another question is: who makes the Grose jets that are currently being sold for the mini's and MG's ? Duffman If it makes you feel any better, yes, the Grose jets are a neat item but the stock jets work just fine. So if you can get past the outdated website at ZTherapy , give Bruce a call. Dave Ruiz

Fuel Pouring out of front Carb
Duffman, The orifice size and threading are different on the HS Model Su's and will not fit the Z SU's. I don't know why MSA keeps advertising Grose jets in their rebuild section. At one time I called MSA and they said they no longer can get Grose Jets. Also, I believe that Z therapy is the company that rebuilds the carbs for MSA...so Bruce would know. Here's some of the information I have been able to dig up over the years about Grose jets: The Grose Jets were made by D & G Valve: 8 Mt Vernon St. Stoneham, MA 2180 (781) 438-1789. However no one answers the phone or returns inquiries by mail (As of 2008) I did read a 510 newsletter that stated BTR Engineering in Australia has acquired the patents to the SU's and is producing the carburetors and parts. Unless things have changed since I emailed them (2008) they handled all the SU's EXCEPT for the Z Cars. Also, some have had problems with Grose jets sticking too and went back to using the stock parts. Hope this helps. Dave Ruiz

Gas tank question
I know this doesn't answer your question directly but if they are like a 280Z I believe they are year specific. You might try Arizona Z car or datsunstore.com (Oliver of Z-Man of Washington) for new or NOS (New Old Stock) tanks. They aren't cheap however. To elaborate on EScalon's advice: I just restored my tank with POR-15 and it turned out really well. The POR-15 coating will patch pinholes. The key to using POR-15 is to follow the directions EXACTLY. Don't substitute cleaners. Use the products in the kit and don't substitute. The tank MUST be absolutely dry after rinsing out the Metal Ready. This took me about 2.5 hours with a heat gun to dry the tank..it wasn't difficult...just tedious. The entire process took about a week. I aired the tank out for about 4 days before starting and once the tank has the sealer it requires 4 days before you can put gasoline into the tank. While it was drying the inside of the tank I coated the straps and outside of the tank with POR-15. As long as you have the tank out...replace all of your hoses and blow out the hard lines with compressed air. You may want to put a secondary Fram G-3 fuel filter on the outlet fuel hose on the tank. So if you are the impatient type...have someone else do it. Some people have a radiator shop boil and patch gas tanks. There is a company called gastankrenu.com that will clean and seal the tank for you. The estimate I got from them in 2008 to restore my 76 280Z tank was about $400.00. In addition to POR-15, there are gas tank sealing products from the Eastwood Company and a product by Krem. They all work basically the same as POR-15. There is a write-up using POR-15 by Dogma420 written on 10-08-2005 Titled: "Treating inside/outside with POR-15 products and removing evaporation tank". Good luck Dave Ruiz

New ride 1972 Datsun 240Z
I'm about to replace the differential mount in my 280 for the same reason. Also check your mustache bar bushings that help support the differential. They could also be a cause of the rear end noise. Check the condition of your suspension bushings in both the front and rear. Replacing many of them will make a noticeable improvement. Do you have a factory service manual? They can be downloaded free. You may want to contact Ztherapy and get their Just SU , Datsun 240-280ZX Tune-up, and Street Racing Suspension DVD's. They are a very helpful resource. Good luck with the project Dave Ruiz

States' Emission Laws...
California also has smog exempt counties (at least for now). Most of these counties are north of San Francisco: parts of Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake Humbolt, Siskyu, Del Norte, etc. I have a 76 280z and I don't have to have a bi-annual smog test. I just send in my yearly fee and proof of insurance. My Z is registered in Mendocino county. As sblake mentioned, I would have to have it smogged if I wanted to sell it. Dave Ruiz:beer:
