bogging engine
Your bogging problem sounds just like the problem I had on my 72 240. I went through many of the same exercises you have including putting on a new coil. Same problem existed so I went through even more tests. Then one day due to information I read in these forums I decided to change the coil again...presto! the coil I had bought was bad out of the box! The 2nd fixed the problem right away.

My 72 240 is named Warren Z. I believe I have an original release of all his vinyl and a copy of everything on CD. May he rest in peace or as he would say "I'll Sleep when I'm Dead"

The thread actually started out with gema's request "...I want to try and 'experience' the Z as I would have in the 70's. So, all you old-timers...if you could pick two or three albums for me to listen to while I drive/work on the 240z, which would they be, and why?" To make it truly as he would have experienced it in the 70's and if he wants us to pick "two or three albums" I guess he'll have to install an 8 track player so he can experience the "fade out, click-click, fade in" sounds as the track changes right in the middle of a song. Also don't forget to wedge that matchbook under the 8 track to "adjust" the tracking.

It will have two be a 2-disk set at least. Maybe 3, let's see 80 minutes x 3 CD's equals 240 minutes..sounds just right! I sort of had a car theme in my head but in the spirit of this thread I started reminicsing about the songs I used to cruise to in the 70's. I couldn't leave out Bodhittsatva or Sultans of Swing. The order I wrote them is definitely NOT the order I'd put them in. Perhaps each CD could have it's own "feel" one cruising, War, Pink Floyd, Segar, Steely Dan, a second for highway/road tripping with Allman Bros, Golden Earring, Meatloaf and a third for tearin' it up with Aerosmith, Queen, Zeppelin, Deep Purple. Got to work some James Gang, Hendrix, Clapton, Santana, Who and Stones in as well. Maybe a early 70's group for trips in the 240 and a later 70's set for the 280? Sounds like another project on the list!

cant make up my mind
My first thought is why not a Z car ??? I did put 150,000 miles on a used Maxima back in New England a few years ago. Lot's of hills, dirt roads, snow, mud, etc. it really held up well. Should be plenty of them to choose from as well as a good supply of parts. Cheers, Jim

Keep or Crap? few questions..
Looks like you have a project! I won't presume to suggest whether you keep or scrap it but I thought I'd share my experience with you, maybe it will help. I bought a 1978 280 for a complete ground up resto. The car was pretty clean to start with, just a little rust bubble here and there, in front of rear wheel, front end of rocker panel and under battery tray. Floors, rear deck, wheel well, frame rails, hatch area, hatch were all rust free. I'm in Houston Texas and the car is a TX car for the record. My plan was: 1. Strip car myself 2. Bring to media blast guy and have blasted to bare metal 3. Bring to body shop for epoxy prime 4. Have body shop fill all rust holes with metal, and dolly and stretch any dents, dings, etc...no bondo please! 5. Rebuild suspension, while car at BS 6. Put suspension in car at BS 7. Have BS paint engine bay 8. Bring car home, install motor, trans 9. Bring back to BS with all the parts, doors, hatch, hood, etc and let BS put it together and paint it 10. Bring home and finish assembly myself I interviewed and visited about 12 body shops. Some wanted nothing to do with a car already taken apart. Some weren't prepared for the multiple steps I wanted to take. I found a restoration and custom hot rod shop that would look at it. I brought the car over on the trailer and left it for a couple days. When I went back they said they'd do it for 16,000.00....cough, cough...ummm thanks but out of my budget. I found a very nice shop that does custom paint work, lot's of old Vette's, hot rods and he took the job. For all labor and materials the tab was 7,000.00. I'm really happy with the results, you can see some of this process in my gallery. So I guess my point is plan your process, interview body shops, check out their work, take you're time and get quotes. Then you can decide if it fits in your budget or a car with less rust might provide a better starting point and help reduce the cost of the body prep. I hope you enjoy your project as much as I enjoyed mine. Every step from researching body shops to trailering the shell around town to rebuilding the tranny was enjoyable for me. Operating Temp. 71 240z HLS 30
I have been experimenting with different thermostats. I've used a 160 degree, a 195 and currently a 180. The gauge definitely reflects the difference. With the 180 degree t-stat installed the needle is almost vertical just a little left of center. Cheers, Jim

Hey Burt, I have a front override bar that is in good condition. I'm not sure what year it came from as I never saw it on a car. It is about 20-24" long, has a slight vee or bend to it and would sit up about 2-3 inches from the bumper. Is this what you are looking for? If you know where I can see a picture of what you're looking for, I can tell you if that's what I have. I'll pull it out this weekend and get a pic for you. Jim Jim

Rubber firewall clamps/grommets
The rubber clamps in my parts car were in good shape. Maybe you could get lucky at a junkyard or better yet...get a parts a car! Hope your enjoying the process! Jim

Electrical connector repairs
I'm trying to locate the individual male and female pins found in the connectors throughout the electrical harnesses in my 78 280. I believe the manufacturer may be Molex. I know there are insertion/removal tools and various sizes of these pins. Has anyone found a source for these items? Perhaps a listing of the different sizes and locations? The connectors I'm concerned with are under the dash and a few of these pins have corroded and broken but the plastic connector housing and wiring is in fine shape. It would be so easy to remove the bad pins, cut and recrimp new ones on have a new connector. Any help would be appreciated, I'll keep researching and if I learn anything I'll certainly pass it on.
