I can second the instance where the clutch alignment tool supplied let the disc slip. I nearly beat the hell out of my engine and transmission before I figured it out haha. It was the tool that came with the Excedy kit currently installed on the car.

So how do you go about troubleshooting? Loosen the pressure plate? Mate the transmission, pull it back slightly to tighten the pressure plate back?

  2. Good morning,

I’ve been trying to mate my 5 speed transmission onto the engine. This should be pretty straightforward.

I used the clutch alignment tool when lining up the clutch to the flywheel and removed it after tightening down the pressure plate.

But the transmission still not go all the way in. The input shaft seems to get hung up. How can I rectify this? Any ideas would be appreciated.

  3. A lot of advice the past few days. Had the flywheel and clutch installed…. Then realized they may be different sizes.

figured or they are both 225mm.  Then I realized I didn’t swap out the pilot bushing. Everything came off and had that fixed. Thanks to autozone for having a puller for rent.

moved into the the transmission. Replaced the throw out bearing and reinstalled the fork and bearing.

I’ve heard the flywheel and pressure plate doesn’t need to be balanced because the L28 is internally balanced? What’s the verdict?

  4. Good evening,

trying to install this XTD clutch. 6 of 9 bolts line up.  Is this normal for after market pressure plates or is this a part that needs all 9 bolts.

I’ve tried researching the part number and haven’t found anything relating to it or if it is for Datsun Zs.

  5. Greetings,

I am getting closer to dropping a rebello with SU carbs into my 77’ 280Z. I removed the EFI cables and EFI computer out of the vehicle.

Will removing the EFI computer and cables affect any other operation of the vehicle or am I good to go since I’m using carburetors?

    any insight would be appreciated!.

  6. Heard back from fidanza. They have a replacement friction plate I can purchase.

new engine mounts came in, one wasn’t a perfect fit so I can to do a mod. Now I need to fund beer, pizza, and friends to bring the engine over, assemble the transmission, and drop it in.

I wonder if it's possible to flip it over and use the other side? It may be fresh and useable?

I’ll take a look. I wouldn’t be surprised if the bolts didn’t line up.

  8. Ok I’ll keep that in mind. May need a new flywheel.

This one is a used aluminum flywheel. It does have a replaceable friction plate.. I’ll need to see where I can find one.

  9. Ok guys I need some guidance. I’m about to mate the transmission, clutch, flywheel, and engine together. From what I gather I will need to purchase;

    *new engine mount insulators
    *engine mounts
*bolts to add transmission to engine

Not sure if I need bolts for clutch or additional parts. Any guidance would be appreciated!

  10. The job gave us a family day today so we can have a 4 day weekend for Memorial Day. Took today removing the EFI cables.

relatively easy, I did use a door clip remove to disconnect electric connections and fuses. Made short work of it. EFI is now removed and I’m ready to work on assembling the engine, transmission, and clutch.

clutch slave cylinder was installed last weekend.

  11. Tried to repair the lock cylinders. Removed the driver door panel and trim to work on it. It’s trashed. The uninstalled passenger cylinder was functional.

in a move of genius I reversed the latches and installed the functional cylinder on the drivers door.

Additionally installed the new handle for the passenger door with the seized cylinder.  It ideal reinstalling the seized cylinder but whatever. It be like that sometimes.
