That will work. I've used the earlier shifters on the later transmissions.

    Ah......okay.....

    No...
  4. I notice in your profile that you have a 78. There are differences between 76 and 78, there are even differences between the 77 and the 78. 78 kind of stood alone against the other years of 280Z and was more like the ZX. Take a look at the fuel rail in the 78 pic that Jeff posted vs. the fuel rail in Pomorza's car. 78 is the first year for that style fuel rail and a few changes went with it. Note the difference in the configuration of the valve cover breathter hose. Page ET-3 in the 1978 FSM is a diagram of the vacuum lines/system piping but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better example than Jeff's pictures.

    He has a 77.....
  7. In a word....NO.

I've never had a problem with K & N drop ins in any vehicle I've used them in. Had them in my Z, my 810, my 320 Pickup, several other prior owned vehicles and presently have them in the vehicles we own now. The BCDD is an emissions control device that reduces HC emissions during off throttle coasting. It's triggered by intake manifold vacuum and allows an additional source of air and fuel to enter the intake manifold during deceleration to compenstate for the change in mixture. A problem in that circuit could have an effect on idle.

I believe all 260Zs had the "280Z" turn signals in the grill but your car based on the VIN should have the smaller 73 240Z type bumpers rather than the ones that look somewhat like the ones in my avatar, right? If that's the car in question in your avitar, it's an early 260Z.
  11. I was with them for 7 years. I drove both vehicles (280Z and 320 Pickup) pretty much as I pleased. As long as they weren't used as daily drivers, i.e. to and from work or school, etc. they didn't have a problem.
  12. When I had mine, I could find rear shocks but struts were harder. I bought my front struts somewhere online about 4 years ago. (can't remember the name-sorry). You have a nice looking 810 coupe. Don't see many of them. I miss mine:cry:

Anything from RLS30-00001 to RLS30-60000 (smaller 240Z type bumpers) is an early 74. RLS30-60001 and up (larger 280Z type bumpers) is a late 74.
  14. Wow. Those are pricey. Good thing that Hawaiian shirts are not my style even with Datsuns/Nissans on them.....
  15. That sounds about right. When I was with Hagerty, I paid a total of $168 per year which covered both my 78 280 @ $14K and my 64 L320 PU @ $9K.
  16. Uh-oh, you named him.
  17. There was a elderly couple that used to frequent the Southern California Japanese car shows and they sometimes wore shirts that she made from material similar to that except I don't recall it having the newer Zs. Just 240Zs. On a side note, I was somewhat reluctant to click on this thread for fear it might have somethig to do with a certain Z club member that shall remain nameless..

Well, there's your problem right there!. I doubt if you have/had an air bubble. Never experienced that on a Datsun. Other cars, like my GTO, or the Lincoln LS I once had, yes, but never on a Datsun.

Could also be a bad gauge. I've had that happen. Inside a typical gauge there are coils. As the resistance from the sending unit varies with the coolant temperature, the current at the points along the coils will also vary. This is in turn will cause the strength of the magnetic field generated in the coils to increase or decrease which will force the needle to move to the proper position. If there is a 'dead spot' in one of those coils, the needle will drop when it reaches that area.

Well, technically, no. The design of the 78 fuel rail is different. But for the purpose you're saying I guess that's true. Still, overall, he'd be much better off with the correct FSM for most all of the testing involved in troubleshooting the system. I'll have to think about that one before responding...

280ZX's had cruise control? I did not know that.....

This old thread is beginning to drift off topic a bit, and this won't help with that, but even that 'bloated insult' (78 280Z) was faster around a race circuit than a 240Z under the conditions outline in Richard's post.

You really need an FSM for a 77. There are differences between 77 and 78. Some of the realays are in different places, the fuel pump actuates differently, the voltage regulator changed from external in 77 to internal in 78. etc. Try this: 77 FSM
  24. The vented hood was original on the 77 and 78 280Z. Sometimes people put them on they earlier cars becaue that like or want the vents.
  25. You shouldn't have run the pump until it was empty. There was no real need. The fact that it ran proprely from the gas can proved that the problem was in your tank. What were you trying to accomplish by running it out of gas? Anyway, it takes a while to prime the system when you run it out of gas so that's likely why it's not starting. Don't mess with the fuel pump. You can't clean the gas tank without removing it, at least not effectively. Best to have it professionally done, especially an EFI tank. Some people have put an inline filter on the input side of the pump to temporarily solve this problem but at the rate you say the pressure drops, I'd say you need to clean the tank.
