I talked to the guy that owned this car and the guy that had the yellow Fairlady Z next to it. They are both marines that are stationed in Okinawa and they bought the cars there and brought them here, but they are still stationed in Japan. Thats why the plates are on still. I saw the club that these guys are affiliated with in Japan and there are so many of these skylines in it and what looked like a row of ZG's. This is an awesome car. -Ben

1970 Factory Refurbished 240Z's
I just came across some new and interesting information on this subject. It is out of the book titled "Datsun Z, from Fairlady Z to 280z", by Brian Long. It is an excellent book containing factory pictures and information on road cars for the home market and the exports, as well as history of the company, history of z's in racing, restoration, and vin numbers for all the Z cars and engines. The 240z's that were destined to be restored and then sold by Nissan were hand picked by specialists. The cars were completely stripped to the bare shells and the restored to better than new condtion. There were as many as 200 cars being restored. When they were being sold the average running price was 25k. The cars had a full one year warranty, through the ten selected Nissan dealerships that would sell these cars. The cars were restored correct to the specification of the year. The only things done differently were the use of modern paint and techniques, better rust-proofing, a better radiator, Bridgestone Potenzza tyres and abestos-free clutch and brake components. Nissan claims that each car took about 300 hours to complete and that each car got around 800 new parts. It would be awesome to get one of the cars. I am sure that they are more refined then when they came out yet still a great sports car. Take care -Ben

Fairlady Zg
A price on a zg? These cars are extremely hard to come by becuase most of their owners are enthusiast that would never want to sell them. One in the US is almost unheard of. There was a white one that was selling in Japan not to long ago and the guy wanted 20,000 USD. I am not sure how much one is worth, but I would think it would be at least 20k. Have you seen the car? If you are sure that it is a factory 240zg you have a find that you might not come across for sometime. If you are not sure it is a true 240zg look at the vin #s. For a ZG the vin# starts with HS30-H. Caution: there are many fake Zg's. Most of the people that are selling these cars think they have a ZG and they really don't because bolt on g-nose kits were offered installed onto right hand drive autos. The ZG was built from October of 71' to September of 73'. What color is the car? They only came in GP white, GP red, and GP maroon. It would be awesome if you could post some pics of the car. I could be wrong zspeed, but I don't think that the ZG ever came with a dohc engine. All the ZG's had the L24. The predessor to the ZG, which was the 432 had the S20(which is the dohc engine). Like Z kid said, talk to Alan. I am sure he will see this thread. He has a ZG so he would be the best source for any of your questions. Take care. Man, a 240ZG. That is so awesome. I was planning someday to go to Japan and buy one there and have it shipped here, but you found one here. Wow. Good luck. -Ben

Seat Question
I would post a picture, but I am at university and my car is at home in the garage because I just cleaned very thouroghly for the MSA show. It is the space that is below the clock, gas, and amp gage. The two spaces are on each side of the map light if I remember correctly. Thanks. -Ben

1970 Factory Refurbished 240Z's
I know that a lot of the cars were partially finished and that they cost a good 30k. There was an article in Road & Track magazine around the time Nissan was planning to do this. Maybe the library would have the magazines around 1997 and I am sure you would find what you are looking there. Take care. -Ben

Air conditioning in 260
Today I was talking to one of my neighbors and they said they bought their 260 new and that it had air conditioning and that was really rare. Mine has it too. Is it really rare for an early US spec 260 to have air conditioning? Was it a factory or dealer installation? Thanks. -Ben

Seat Question
The warning light that is on when you are in gear and your seat belt is not on has that red plate that indicates there is no seat belt on is there on the dash. On the opposite side closest to the driver, has no plate nor does it light up. I believe this to be original. Am I right and what is the use of this place? I have an early US 74' 260. Thank you. -Ben

Wood strip restoration for door panels.
I have an early 260z. From what I can tell, when I first bought the car in 2001 it was almost never touched. It was in pretty bad shape, but the milage read 62,000. I believe it to be true because the internals were in such good shape. Furthermore, I am almost certain that everything in the interior is original. The only things that I have replaced is the arm rests, and of course the super cool rally clock that actually works. Jeff, you might have thought that it was a 280 because the 260 and the 280 both share the same arm rests. Take a look the car for yourself. Thanks for the posts. Take care. -Ben

Wood strip restoration for door panels.
When I first bought my z the door panels were in great shape except for the chrome on the wood trim. I didn't want to buy new door panels just for that. More so, trying to track down a pair of prestine wood strips was impossible. So what I did was I used plastic model chrome foil. It does not look perfect, but it looks pretty darn close. It is not that hard to do, but it will take patience and care. Things you will need: -sharp razor knife: prefferably the one that has interchangable blades -a bunch of que-tips -"Bare-Metal" chrome foil that can be found at most hobby shops. Make sure you get just chrome, and not ultra-chrome because the ultra-chrome is too thin and very hard to work with. $6 -tweezers -ruler procedure: 1. Cut the width of chrome strip to 1/2'' and then place on the trim individually. 2. Burnish it with que-tip. 3. Cut away the excess chrome foil. 4. Burnish again. Here are photos of before and after. I hope this helps anyone in their quest for a stunning interior. If you are having trouble just pm me. Good luck. -Ben

Wierd whining sound coming from the engine compartment...
I have not heard that sound anymore since I wanted to go in there and check what it was. Figures.. I am going to be driving it from the Bay Area to Orange county next week for the Motorsport Z nationals so that will be the test of what that sound was. I want to find that kitty. Darn. Thanks a lot. -Ben
